Nose Surgery

Nose surgery most often refers to rhinoplasty or septoplasty. Rhinoplasty is a procedure that is intended to reshape the nose in order to bring it into proportion and improve a person's facial appearance. Other goals of rhinoplasty may include improvement of functional characteristics related to breathing. Septoplasty addresses the septum.

Why nose surgery?

There are several reasons for a person to pursue nose surgery; most are related to dissatisfaction with the nose and its aesthetic properties as they stand in relation to the rest of the face. One might undergo a surgical procedure on the nose to alleviate dissatisfaction related to the following conditions:

  • Hook nose
  • Crooked nose
  • Bulbous tip
  • Droopy tip
  • Large nose
  • Rhinophyma
  • Wide nose
  • Nostril visibility
  • Nasal hump
  • Saddle nose
  • Cleft lip and palate

Nose surgery procedures

The nasal hump is the one of the most common reasons for men and women seeking rhinoplasty, or nose surgery. The hump (or bump) may be made of bone, cartilage, or a mixture of both. In addition to the hump there may be other imperfections in the profile, such as the angle between the nose and the upper lip which could also be corrected. A surgeon will decide on the ideal lines of the nasal profile when planning nose surgery. This planning phase requires not only an intimate knowledge of nasal anatomy and structural support, but also a strong artistic sense of facial balance and harmony.

The ideal outcome is a natural-appearing nose with balance and harmony, enhancing the beauty of the eyes and lips.

To correct rhinophyma, one might pursue treatment with one of the following three modalities:

Other cosmetic changes to the nose might involve a non-surgical nose job, often using an injectable filler to augment certain nasal areas and alter the aesthetic profile of the nose.
