NYC Derm Promoting New SmartLipo Dual Wavelength Laser
New York city dermatologist Bruce Katz, MD announced in a press release on June 16, 2008 that his Manhattan clinic has been chosen to debut a new version of the SmartLipo laser lipolysis device which integrates an additional wavelength known to be effective for skin tightening.
Combining the two wavelengths (1064 nm and the 1320 nm ) is supposed to improve the SmartLipo device's capabilities for fat liquefication and skin tightening.
The original SmartLipo device used just the 1064 nm wavelength, and the lower-priced competitor made by CoolTouch, the Cool Lipo, uses the 1320 wavelength to theoretically accomplish the same goal. Several physicians have answered the question "What is Smart Lipo or Cool Lipo?" on RealSelf.com to help explain the difference.
Cynosure has already sued Cool Touch for patent infringement, asserting that Cynosure holds a patent that covers the use of technology for any wavelength of laser used to remove fat.
The press release makes no mention of the intended results of combining the wavelengths in the new version of the device. Cynosure's website has no information or announcements related to a new version of the device.
