Quick fix: 25% of women open to cosmetic surgery

Quick fix: 25% of women open to cosmetic surgery

The Associated Press recently released a poll regarding women's perceptions of their bodies and health in general. The survey found that approximately 50% of women in America have negative feelings about both their weight and their figure.

One of the more interesting results from the survey found that 25% have considered getting some type of cosmetic surgery, with a tummy tuck as the most desired treatment. Breast augmentations come in second.

Women appear to be looking for a quick fix instead of committing to long-term changes.

  • Just 8% of women eat the recommend number of fruits and vegetables daily
  • Women only spend 20 minutes on any type of daily exercise, while most spend around 27 minutes on their beauty regime
  •  Exercise-related purchase and services amount to just $17 a month for most women, while they are spending upwards to $50 on beauty items and services.

But is cosmetic surgery worth it?

For major plastic surgery procedures, the majority say yes. Of the more than 220 reviews by patients on RealSelf, 87% believe that their tummy tuck was worth the expense and recovery, even at an average cost of over $8,000.

Breast augmentation is considered worth it by 81% of women, at an average cost of $6,667.

Perception vs. reality

Yet, any perception that cosmetic surgery is "quick fix" stands to be corrected by the stories told in the patient stories within RealSelf.  The reality is that recovery from cosmetic surgery is a long and often difficult process that involves plenty of pain!  So before you jump into anything, make sure you do your research and understand what you can expect.  And in the meantime, perhaps add a few more friuts and veggies to the mix.

I believe that no matter what your age, you should develop an exercise regimen and enjoy the foods you like, with moderation and most definitely portion control. Portion size is the key, along with a variety of exercises that raise your heart rate, for no less than 45 minutes per day. Forget all the quick weight loss pills, programs and promises made by those people; they do not work. Weight loss too quickly only results in muscle loss and will slow your metabolism and sabbotage your ultimate goals. These words are spoken by someone who has had practice what I preach! Yes, you can get "lipo" but what they don't tell you, is that you will loose sensation in that area for years to come and ready for this... the fat doesn't necessarily come back to the area that received lipo, but it will collect in other areas!
