Breast Implants Don't Cause Breast Cancer
An Orlando plastic surgeon recently contributed an article to the Orlando Sentinel in which he described the status of breast cancer in society and the efforts to minimize its negative effects through reconstruction and prevention.
Dr. Richard Bosshardt writes that society's admiration for the breast is an ancient phenomenon and most view them as symbolic of "femininity and desirability." With such importance in the social world, one can see how the possibility of breast removal or disfigurement can be more frightening than cancer itself.
Many women know the statistics and how to focus on prevention but there are some positive aspects and discoveries shared by Dr. Bosshardt that are important to consider; contrary to speculation, breast implants, bras and high fat diets do not cause an increased risk of breast cancer.
Also, genetic markers have become excellent indicators of a patient's risk. Finally, doctors are practicing "breast conservation," rather than outright removal and reconstruction has become more sophisticated than ever, with many patients looking better as a result.
