The May 2008 issue of Allure magazine features dermatologists across the country in an article titled "Decent Exposure," addressing all of the skin conditions which affect us as spring and summer arrive.

Boston dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch reminds us that May is the time of year we begin to scrutinize ourselves without clothing.

Dry skin? Dr. Audrey Kunin, clinical instructor of dermatology in Kansas at KU in Lawrence, commiserates over the wacky spring temperature changes, saying “on top of all your dry skin, you’re suddenly having oiliness and acne, or even an allergy…”

For extra rough skin, Dr. Jeffrey Dover, clinical professor of dermatology in Connecticut at Yale University in New Haven, recommends Vibraderm, a form of microdermabrasion which uses a paddle rather than abrasive particles or suction to smooth out rough skin.

Montclair, New Jersey dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie suggests AmLactin, Salex, or good old Vaseline for knees and elbows which have turned gray.

San Francisco area dermatologist Dr. Vic Narurkar suggests Isolaz acne therapy for a double-whammy of pore cleansing and bacteria destruction – an affordable laser treatment that reduces all types of acne.

Dr. Seth Matarasso of San Francisco explains that “90% of unsightly blood vessels are genetic,” and can be masked by self tanner or shimmering lotion or treated with sclerotherapy or a laser that targets blue.

Fellow San Francisco dermatologist Dr. Kathy Fields swears by shaving cream or gel for that extra smooth shave, followed by a moisturizer containing soy extract to slow hair growth.

New York City dermatologist Dr. Arielle Kauvar recommends laser hair removal for nasty bikini line bumps, although she cautions that it’s expensive and requires up to six treatments to eliminate 80-90% of the hair.

And of course, sunscreen is the most important skin protector, which Dr. Kauvar recommends be used every day.
