A press release by Reuters on June 4 cited Allergan's widely used medication Lumigan as the reason for dramatic eyelash growth in patients already using the drug for glaucoma.

Allergan CEO David Pyott said in an interview that "in 80 percent of patients the before and after (results) were just dramatic -- lengthening, darkening and thickening" of lashes.

According to the article, the FDA has been briefed for years about the research, and to date has not expressed any concerns that the drug will affect pressure in the eye (for those who do not suffer from glaucoma.)

Allergan expects FDA approval and to be marketing Lumigan for eyelash enhancement as early as the summer of 2009. Pyott says no marketing would begin until the product was indeed available.

Allergan currently makes Botox and Juvederm, two of the most popular cosmetic injectables.
