Tennis star Simona Halep seeks breast reduction: Is 17 too young?
17-year-old Romanian tennis star Simona Halep, who won the junior French Open last year, has announced that she will have a breast reduction later this year.
Halep says her 34DD's are hindering her game and that she'd like to carry less weight on the tennis court.
Halep told ProSport.ro in this nearly incoherent translation, "(My breasts) inconvenience me, it's very hard with them. It's a weight in addition to confound me speed response. I can not go on very well. Shoot me down. Nothing in life is not like me even though sport was not all I was doing surgery."
Is 17 too young for breast reduction?
Most of the plastic surgeons asked to comment about teen breast reduction cautioned that it really depends on the patient, her maturity level, and individual needs. New York City plastic surgeon George Beraka, MD warned that "many teenagers' breasts are still growing. Then surgery should be put off, or it may have to be done again."
Still pretty risky
Chicago plastic surgeon Peter Johnson, MD warns that after a breast reduction, "successful breast feeding without supplementation is unlikely," and also that at age 17 it can be difficult to understand feelings about an issue so far in the future. Second, there will be a scar on the breast and nipple."
For a tennis star with a shot at becoming a pro, it's a decision that has career implications which remain to be seen.
