The "gummy bear" implant got its name because, like its gummy bear candy counterpart, you can cut a wedge out of the breast implant and it retains its shape.

Cohesive breast implants
Unlike silicone breast implants with traditional silicone filler, cohesive silicone gel does not spill or lose its shape in the unlikely event of a shell rupturing. Think of silicone implants having the consistency of brie cheese. If you cut a wedge out of the implant it would gradually "run" out. The gummy bears are more "cohesive" and are "form stable."
The Mentor gummy bear version of this device is called the CPG while the Allergan gummy bear implant is called the 410. In the US, neither is available to the general public.
Gummy bear implant medical trials
Cohesive gel implant trials underway include:
- Allergan 410 anatomically shaped implants already available in the UK and Canada
- Mentor CPG (Contour Profile Gel): 950 breast augmentation patients are enrolled and results will be tracked over 10 years
- Silimed/Sientra Nuance and Enhance (shown in photo)
These are investigational devices currently available only through clinical trials in the United States.
