Please use caution when deciding to use a permanent filler such as Artefill. Artefill and it's predecessor, Artecoll, have been known to cause serious reactions, and in the case of Artecoll, these reactions have been reported in the medical literature up to 12 years after receiving the injections! Artefill is a non-biologic, synthetic agent, made of PMMA (Plexiglas) beads and bovine collagen. While you may receive good correction with this agent initially, I am very concerned about the potential for a long term foreign body reaction, which I have biopsied in my own practice. There are many safe and effective temporary agents available, such as the hyaluronic acids (Restylane, Juvederm, Captique, Perlane) and bovine collagen. While these are temporary agents, in the hands of a well-trained physician, you can get great longevity. I generally can get correction to last upward of one year! Remember that permanent fillers cause permanent problems!
