What/when/how did you tell your children?

I have scheduled my surgery for August.  I'm wondering what others told their children and how long before.  My children are older, 12 and 7.  I know that once they know then their friends will know, etc.  I'm hoping to keep it on the down low as much as possible. I don't want to lie to them, because I've always told them that is the worst thing they can do.  However, being vague and saying that I am going to have surgery to fix my tummy will confuse them more I think.  (I have  IBS and they may think it's for that). Suggestions?

Thanks for you responses. I still haven't said anything. I'm considering waiting until after the surgery is over so they aren't worrying. They have plans with a neighbor that day, so I'm thinking I can tell them after they get home. Idk. I am starting to get a little panicky since I only have 35 days to go.
I have a 7 yr old also. She has known for about a month now that I am going to have surgery. She over heard me (listening in on my convo from the next room) when I called the clinic to schedule my surgery. She didn't ask me what I was having surgery for until last week. I told that I was having the muscles in my tummy fix because they were really loose. She was satisfied with that answer, if I would have told her I was having a tummy tuck she wouldn't have known what I was talking about anyway.

Be honest with them but know you don't need to give them all the details.  Tell them you are getting your tummy fixed so that you feel better.  They are young so really only need to know that you are ok and nothing is really wrong.  Kids just roll with the events and do fine. As long as mom is in the house they are happy.

When you are home recovering give them little things to do to help you.  Like getting you water, snacks etc.  They will feel like little helpers:)
