What are you eating after surgery to help counteract swelling, improve healing, and to get enough nutrients?

I havent had surgery yet but I would say try to get in some protein shakes, they are easy to take in. Make them with fruit so you can get some of your servings in there, plus your getting much needed protein.

I do protein shakes every morning! Put tons of fruit in it and spinach. Tastes sweet and I get full till lunch!
**rosie** 12 Apr 2011
Putting spinach in is awesome.

I try to eat clean 90% of the time, I usually only will eat out once a week. I typically go to the gym 6 days a week, but I'm really going to have to tighten up my diet post op since doc said gym is out of the question for two months. I'm terrified to put on weight after the surgery.

Same here! Gym 6 times out of the week and I'm a calorie counter. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the lucky ones that lost their appetite. lol. So I had to keep counting and lost 4 lbs. postop. You'll do fine. Sound like you're healthy, so your body will respond. 1 week before, I got a reflexology massage from a Japanese woman here who said it would help my body heal. :)

I am eating very small amounts of yogurt, salad, fruit, veggies, soup, everything I had before, but much smaller portions. I drink lots & lots of lemon water too. I got really bad gas yesterday from eating too much too soon. Today I had 1/2 hamburger & it was sooooo good! I feel fine now.
**rosie** 11 Apr 2011
I'm glad your feeling better!
**rosie** 12 Apr 2011
Do you find yourself more or less hungry than before the surgery? I also read that you get fuller faster is that true?
BikiniDreaming 12 Apr 2011
Hi Mad, thanks for that will remember to eat small. I seem to remember peppermint tea was good after my c'sections but will try the lemon water too.

I wonder if lemon water does anything? I've always had lemon in my water since I was like 13, but that's just because I like the taste. Are there benefits to it?

Lemon water is supposed to be good for weight loss, see a blog post on this very topic here. But it can wreak havoc on your teeth. Proceed with caution, ladies.

Awesome! Thanks you for this post. I've been drinking lemon water religiously for a year now, while I lost all my weight, but it was just the taste I loved in the morning and in my water. Thanks for the heads up with teeth caution, I see straws in my near future! :)

Thanks for the warning- I did not even think of that, but it makes sense. Just one glass a day for me with the lemon water now! I will have to try cucumber mint water next!

Whats a good brain of protein drink
**rosie** 13 Apr 2011
it really depends on your tastes and what you like. Me personally I have at least four different kinds. But I would say try "Designer Whey" (but not the one you get at the supermarket that's got the "biggest loser" endorsement). Its too low in protein and too high in sugar. In any case you can find Designer Whey at GNC or Vitamin Shop. Also, you can find a brand at walmart called Six Star Muscle Professional Strength Whey Protein, which has a great amount of protein per serving (26 grams) and is low fat and low sugar. That costs about $17 for a 2 pound tub. Also, there's a brand (also at Walmart) called Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein Powder and that will run you about $13 a tub and the flavors are pretty good and again has 26 grams of protein. If you mix a little milk with a banana and a tablespoon of natural peanut butter with the chocolate protein powder you have a complete meal with healthy fats, healthy carbohydrates and a substantial amount of protein.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

I use the Whey Metabolic one from GNC and I only do one scoop of it, I can't imagine 3!
**rosie** 13 Apr 2011
How many grams of protein in 1 scoop?
turbo111222333 13 Apr 2011
A lot. I'll have to check again. The lady at GNC told me to do 1 if I didn't want to bulk up too much. I might do 2 when I start the gym again.

Thank u!! Im going to go pick some up after i drop kids off this morning!!
3/24/11 13 Apr 2011
Does it taste good
**rosie** 13 Apr 2011
Did you pick up the protein powder today?
turbo111222333 13 Apr 2011
I got chocolate, so ya! :)
**rosie** 13 Apr 2011
I just got back, slipped out at lunch to pick up some of the chocolate peanut butter flavor. Im crazy about chocolate and peanutbutter so Im hoping the flavor is good and while I was there picked up another vanilla. I seem to go through that flavor faster than all the others.

Hope it works for you.

Talking about cucumber-mint water over on our Facebook page!

I really enjoyed the soup that I had made ahead of time & froze!! That was perfect, because it was easy to heat up, full of nutrients & very easy on my tummy. I also always had gas tablets handy, because at night after all of my eating, I felt full of gas. I took one tablet each night after dinner & it really relieved me!!
