What would be the most effective treatment to lessen the size and dark color of a large flat scar on a shin?

I've had this scar for nearly over 6 months now after a skateboarding accident. The scarring is flat but of course darkly discolored. Being on my shin and being a woman this scar really makes me not want to wear skirts, shorts and dresses. Around the dark skin of the scar which you probably can't see in the photo it is lighter than my natural skin tone. Though the color has receded alot back to my skin tone I can still tell it is lighter. Otherwise this scar looks like a birthmark. If I didn't look at it and ran my hand along my shin, I wouldn't be able to tell it was even there. That is how flat and smooth it is in comparison to my skin. Back to my question. What would be the most effective treatment for this? Any help and advice would be appreciative.
