By Angiemcc on 17 Apr 2011

What have all you post-op tummy tuckers used to counteract the constipation that almost inevitably comes after surgery?

I was afraid of constipation, so was prepared with Milk of Magnesia. I also only ate fluids for days, but still.....

I started taking a bit of the MoM a couple days after surgery, but it was so gross, I didn't take enough. I took more the next day, and it finally worked the day after; but I had a bit of the runs for a day or so.

The biggest problem was, I couldn't get in and out of my recliner on my own, and was dopey from the meds, so hubby had to keep helping me up and down.

My first real bowel movement after surgery came on day three and I didn't use the MOM. I can tell you I pooped something the size of an anaconda though. lol

Since I've had surgery before I know how anesthesia & pain meds really slow down your digestive system so I was prepared. I took a stool softener every day & eventually a laxative. By day 4 all was moving again.

I have read about women trying several different things.  What works for one may not work for the next.

Personally the Milk of Magnesia worked like magic for me.

Definitely prunes and prune juice for me.
ABQme 21 Apr 2011
How long did it take before you were able to go?

After the first dose of MOM it took like 3 hours and then...WHOA!   Be near a bathroom when you hear and feel the rumbling start.

2 days post op - day 1 of eating prunes for breakfast, again for lunch (determined to go..) and then 1 glass of prune juice, got half way through a bowl of rice and bingo...
Had to stop eating prunes day 4 cos I was going about 4 times a day. Now at day 8, half a glass of prune juice or couple of prunes in my breakfast is enough.

Knowing that surgery always slows down my system I was prepared. I used a stool softener & then one dose of a laxative. Kimmers is right - stick close to the bathroom!

No one warned me, I cried. The antibiotics will do damage. I needed help with stool softeners, laxatives and an enema. Not pretty.....

well, I was told to avoid "stimulants" as you dont want to become overly gassy... but, I used Milk of Magnesia for 2 days. (2 tbsp/day) and ended up with well... lets just say "it" was a little TOO EASY to get out. Ugh.... I should note that I was not taking any narcotics after I left the hospital 1 dpo so maybe that is why it did that to me....

I'm still waiting for the big movement. If nothing happens by tomorrow, I'm going to take the Miralax I bought. I've been taking colace twice a day as instructed and nothing yet.
trishvan99 27 Apr 2011
I took the softener and miralax for a week before the moment..... Wish you luck. How are you doing otherwise?
ABQme 27 Apr 2011
I have been drinking prune juice and eating prunes and that has helped finally....

My surgery was yesterday - when should I take a laxative??
Kimmers25 (Community Manager) 7 May 2011

Start taking them now...get ahead of this because the meds do a number on your system quickly.

Please forgive me, a few keys are not working on y keyboard.
Taking percoset and soma after breast augmentation. Taking fiber and dcolax every day. LOTS of fruit and water.
Bt I cant poop. Its been now 5.5 days. I hurt very badly. For some reason, I still want to eat meals, because I feel hungry. Then I feel so sick after I eat. Help!

My PS recommended 2 tablespoons of mineral oil twice a day and I never had a problem. I also ate plenty of fresh fruit all day. Hope this helps.
