Can You Have Surgery to Change You Hair into a Different Texture?

I was wondering if you can have surgery or if its even possible to have you hair texture changed. I have African-American hair that is short, produces a lot of oil and doesn't grow fast and I want Asian like hair that is long, grows fast and doesn't get oily that much. I basically want the over-all look and feel of Asian hair.

I agree with Bacchante about the surgery part. But there is solution for your problem which is you can use the 20 inch hair extensions that will give you an Asian look as you can choose the hair extensions to suit you yourself.

The short answer is no -- there's no surgery that can change the shape of your hair follicles.

To explain, the texture of your hair is determined in part by the shape of the follicle -- round follicles = straight hair, and the more oval it is, the curlier it is. Also, very straight or fine hair often lacks a medulla, the inner 'core' of the hair shaft.

The curlier the hair, the more easily the cuticle can get damaged. (The cuticle is made up of overlapping 'shingles' that make up the outer part of the hair strand) That's why curly or nappy hair can look so dull, instead of being shiny -- the cuticle isn't smooth, so it doesn't reflect light. Also, when it's curly, it's harder for the oil to get all the way down the hair shaft, so it can get pretty dry.

There are certain straightening techniques that you can get done, though -- Asian straightening is one. All of them are permanent and use chemicals. It's up to you to decide if it's worth the expense, since you'll need touch-ups.
