Can we stand up straight after tummy tuck?
By melsflossin on 06 Feb 2011
I've read where some PS will allow you to stand straight after TT if you can. How long did it take to do it for all of you. My PS told me i can go back to work in 1 week. I am a nurse who passes out medicaitons. Physically easy job.

Most women I've read about here on RealSelf (which is quite a few) say that two weeks is the absolute minimum you should take off work. You will tire very easily after a tummy tuck. And standing up straight is often physically impossible for the first few weeks.
Check out this RealSelf user's question about not being able to stand up straight after a week post-op.
Oh my gosh...no work in 1 week. That is crazy. I would not even recommend someone to go back to a desk job after a week.
I physically could not stand up straight for two weeks after the tummy tuck. And then let's talk about the sore back and spasms from being hunched over. It just hurts.
They encourage you to try to straighten up as soon as you are able but it takes a while.
I am sorry but going back to work after 1 week is just not practical for safe and proper healing. I recommend 2-4 at a minimum. I went back at 3 1/2 weeks and was miserable the first two weeks back. And I was in excellent physical shape.
By mid day the swelling is uncomfortable (I have a desk job) today was def better than last week but still draining and taking its toll physically.
As far as standing up straight...I'm still slightly hunched and when I remove my compression garment or spanx I can't stand up straight. If you can take more time off do it, your healing process will be better.
I have a pretty good tolerance for pain...I have 4 children...with my 1st child I had NO meds, no epidural...nothing! The last 2 by c-section...c-section doesn't even prepare you for this pain.
Sorry so long winded but I want you to be informed and have time so your body heals.
Everyone is different but the average is between 2-6 weeks for the standing up straight without pain. The swelling could last for weeks so you need to hang on tight.
It will get better so please do not get frustrated. You are pretty fresh yet.
Soon soon...this is a recovery that can't be rushed...unfortunately:(
As you swell the pain will feel worse. The swelling causes the tightness and burning feeling. The best thing you can do when this happens is get off your feet.
I found that if I sat down, elevated my legs, drank plenty of water, and placed ice packs on my tummy it helped. Also try to eliminate sodium from your diet....that is the devil!
I had to take a lot of little mini naps for the first 6-8 weeks post op. By noon each day I would look like I had a tire around my middle and it hurt like H$%^
That makes me feel better :) That actually scared me thinking about you working in 1 week.
I sit mostly, but work alone and do have customers come in occasionally. I won't be able to lift anything for them, won't be able to spend as long in the bathroom, and may be very uncomfortable even sitting that long. At least, I only work 3 days a week - 6 hours on Thurs and Fri, and 7 on Sat. Hubby can do the Sats. for me, if need be.
If I feel really bad, I will just put a sign on the door saying gone home sick, and leave early. It's only about a 3 to 5 minute drive home, so that's a relief - I don't have to deal with commuter traffic.
Right now, after Feb 2 surgery, I am still really hunched over. I told hubby today that I feel like I look like my mother did - all hunched over with osteoporosis.
My doc told me to not plan to buy new clothes until at LEAST 4 months, and he was right.
