Anyone get sick before surgery??? I'm facing possible SECOND postponement!!

By jazzylady on 24 Feb 2013

I was scheduled for last week, and came down with flu a few days before.  Although I felt better, when I saw the surgeon on the day of surgery, I was cancelled since I was still considered sick.  Surgery is now rescheduled for the end of this week.  I recovered from the flu, but woke up this morning with all the classic symptoms of a sinus infection!   Since it is sunday, I cannot call PS til tomorrow about this.  To complicate things, I currently do not have a primary care dr. since he quit practicing. I truly am thinking of just not having this surgery done.  I worked like a dog to prepare for the time off, my husband has postponed a surgery HE needs, this is just all happening at the WORST time!  I can't help but feel like this is some sort of sign that I should not have the operation.  I didn't have any doubts before, just nerves.  But I am really at my wits end here!! Does anyone know if I will be cancelled AGAIN?

Just an update: Saw my husband's internist this morning- nice guy! I do have a sinus infection and was put on Augmentin. He did a full work up, and said I had no chest congestion, and he thinks I will be ok for surgery on Friday. My pre-op is Thurs, and they will evaluate then- they are keeping the date for now. I already feel a little better from the first dose earlier this morning, if that is possible!

Great!!! Be sure to ask if they want you to finish the aumgenten after surgery. The PS may put you on a different one for after the surgery, and might not want you to take both--or they might.

Thanks, ladies. I have calmed down for the most part from my panic attack over this whole thing. Unfortunately, my one horse town does not have a clinic. There is one in the city where I work, about 45min away. Since it is almost 9pm, I will have to wait until tomorrow. I intend to go into work since if I stay home after last week, I will use up even MORE of my meager sick time that I need for the surgery. I am calling PS first thing in morning. Ironic thing is, I have a full course of augmentin here at home (what I normally take for my sinus infections), but when I saw PS, he didn't want me on antibiotics because it was just viral at that point, and said not to take any, and to call him if I was going to. Maybe there is an issue with taking them before surgery? I don't know...

I like Kimmers idea. My worst fear is getting sick on top of this surgery...maybe you will be done with getting sick, at least. I hope it doesn't have to be postponed, but I guess another week wouldn't be too bad compared to being sick for surgery. How frustrating! ((hugs))

Oh boy...you do need to be healthy prior to surgery.  Do you have some sort of walk in clinic or urgent care you can use?

If you can get on some antibiotics quickly you would possibly be fine by the end of the week.
