I had implant surgery back in January. At that time I had a sinus lift and implant surgery at the same time. I took maybe a day or two worth of Ibuprofen (800 mg) and felt fine a few days later. I went back in last Wednesday (5 days ago) and the doctor reopened my gum to put the healing cap/abutment in place. I left the office and later that evening the bleeding stopped and there was a bit of pain. The next day it felt better, but later that evening it started bleeding again. I called the doctor and he said it should be fine, just bite down on some gauze and the bleeding should stop by the morning, if it didn't that I should let him know. The bleeding did stop but it became more painful. Each day after that the pain got progressively worse and by Saturday I couldn't even sleep because I kept waking up from the excruciating pain. I called the doctor again on Sunday and he seemed to think it may be a dry socket and that I should come in to see him Monday. I went to the office this morning and was sure that he would say it was infected, but he took a look at it and said it looked like it was healing well and that it looked like there wasn't any infection. I asked him why it hurt so bad and he said that when he reopened the gum that he took a big piece of it out which may be the cause of the pain, but normally patients usually feel better after 2-3 days. He said that the pain should probably last a couple more days and prescribed me some Peridex and Vicodin. When the painkillers wear off, the area is throbbing, almost to the side of my tongue. When I even touch the gum it's like a jolt of pain. Should I get a second opinion or do I assume that since he took a look at it today, that it is fine and I should take the meds and just wait it out?
