Anyone have a seroma??

By Happy135 on 19 Apr 2011

I have a seroma and there's not a lot of discussion on it. I was just wondering if there were other women who have dealt with this and how long they had to deal with it. Any input is great. My first drainage was 115, 2nd- 102 and 3rd- 135!! Very frustrated with this.

I am two weeks PO and went for a check up yesterday. He immediately saw a puddle under the skin and said it was a Seroma. I still have one drain in and he had to use a needle to aspirate it last night. drew 45 CC. He told me I have been overactive and that if I don't stop it I would undo everything he did.

I am 22 days PO and my first drain fell out to soon. The stitch came lose during sleep and that drain was putting out the most. :( that was 10 days PO. My second drain was removed two days ago when I went to the doctor and I had seroma as well that the left drain was not pulling. PS removed 44ccs (2 days ago) and is having me come back today. He said 44 is a lot and he does not like it and wants for it to be between 15-20. He wants to get it under control quickly. Says to stay bound up tightly and no twisting, reaching, etc. He pretty much confined me back to the couch for a few days. He says if my body continuea to make the seroma, I will be making visits to have it aspirated. He also said some people's bodies stop producing it quickly while othersay take some time. I am excited to go back today because either way I am one day closer to healing and fabulous!

Had my appointment today and only 14ccs of seroma was aspirated today! PS said that was great and I am headed back the right direction as far as healing goes. So excited. Will go back again in five days.

Hi, this is really good info and I hope that one of you can respond even though it's a year later......I'm 4 weeks post-op (TT) and have been very swollen. I had drains and doc removed them at about 1 week PO. I finally went in today and he said I have a hematoma/seroma (not sure which) and drained 60cc's. He said I shouldn't have to come back again. But everyone that I've read who's had a seroma has gone back a few times. I'm so frustrated with the excessive swelling and it hurts as well. I feel like it's still so tight. He figured I was doing too much and that's what caused it. Now I'm suppose to be a totally couch potato again. Let me know how the rest of your recovery was, did you do any massage or lymphatic massage and scar massage? Thank you

Hi there,
Yip a year has gone by!!!
So sorry to hear that you have a seroma,,, I know it can be extremely inconvenient. 60cc is quite a lot, I believe that you will need to go back to the doc on a few occasions to drain it again . Keep the area as tight as possible after he drains the seroma again, the tighter it is the less liquid is produced. It will be ok soon, Keep your chin up!!!
Lymphatic massage was a great relief, but not during the time I had the seroma. Only did the massage at a later stage. For the scar I used the scar fix cream and silicone strip. I am fully recovered. Tummy is nice and flat, and the scar looks like a thin line.
Good luck, have patience, you will get there too!!

Sounds to me like your PS removed your drains too soon. Its my understanding that this is the leading cause of a seroma. Good luck.

Hi ladies im at 5 weeks po ..developed seroma 3 weeks ago. My incision is a little open which causes me anxiety of course I have been walking a lot ...I'm seeing mostly everyone rested and that seemed to stop the seroma and advice would be nice.

You're fine I completely understand! My seroma is completely gone now. Yesterday my doc tried to get fluid an only 1 cc came out lol. My swelling is alot better! Its not really bad even after I workout. I never wear tight clothes I wear alot of dresses and leggings so my clothes have always fit. I had my breast done also so at 10 weeks post op I can barely tell that I had surgery besides the discomfort of my when I cough and such. How are you feeling? I haven't started scar therapy yet I was too consumed by the seroma ( thats my excuse)
Katie C 4 Jun 2011
I plan on doing my breast next winter, dont think I can handle both at once. You are very brave.Soo glad to hear your seroma has cleared up, what a relief!!!I did have lipo done to my inner and outer thighs at the same time as the tummy tuck. The worst is that I havent worked out since my TT, the lipo and seroma are my excuse!!!LOL!!!

Hi again, sorry I have not responded for so long, been very busy at work, hopefully by now your seroma is much better.
at nine weeks how is your swelling?? I am still swollen and am almost 7 weeks post op. do you fit into your clothes yet?
What scar therapy are you doing??
Happy135 28 May 2011
I will be 9 weeks p/o on tues
Happy135 28 May 2011
I still have a bulge but mine was at the top of my stomach area. My doc said that the scar tissue has formed around the pocket so in a couple of months he will do lipo to make that bulge flat whenever all of my swelling goes down.
Katie C 28 May 2011
How many weeks post are you???
Katie C 6 May 2011
Yes I developed seroma a week after my TT. I go in twice a week to the doc and he uses a syringe to remove the liquid. It is not painful as the area is still numb, But it is a huge inconvenience. Over and above my binder garment a also have to wear a waist binder to keep the area as tight as possible.

I am hoping that this will be over soon

How long gas it been for u that u have been getting your drained and how much fluid does your ps usually drain each time
Katie C 27 May 2011
Hi there, wondering how you are doing?/ is your seroma all gone?? mine lasted two weeks. all is good now. x x x
Happy135 27 May 2011
My seroma is now only outputting 8 cc. Did the area where your seroma was leave a slight bulge from the scar tissue? What amount did your doc stop draining your seroma.
Katie C 28 May 2011
Your body will be able to absorb 8cc on its own now. My PS stopped removing seroma at 5cc. Now there is none. I have no bulge at all.

Here's what some doctors have to say about a seroma in a woman who had a tummy tuck with a resulting seroma. Hope it helps.

Hello. I have posted a picture of what I think is a seroma. I had little drained yesterday. But there is only swelling under my stitches in one area.
Happy135 2 May 2011
Did you ever get it checked out an find out if it was really a seroma
3boys 1princess 2 May 2011
I think I may have 2. On 2 seperate places on my incision it is like a large blister. It finally opened up in a small hole and is draining by itself. Doc said this is a good sign so that he didn't have to go in there and do it. I have an appt on Thursday and we will see if he aspirates it then.
I will keep you posted.
