What is a reasonable charge for a crown on a molar?

I've recently been needing to replace existing crowns, and it seems the cost has increased considerably.  What are people paying?

So I went in and got my temporary crown (I'll get my permanent crown installed on the fifth of December) and I paid for it.  The full price was just under $1300 for a pre-molar!  I almost had a heart attack when they quoted me that price.  That's for zirconia though, not the metal kind, since mine will be visible when I smile.  My insurance covers half of that cost.  I'm in the California Bay Area

I'm supposed to be getting a crown on Thursday.  I don't know the price yet, but I'll post when I get it.  If you're interested in what doctors have had to say on the subject here on RealSelf, you can take a look at this link:

Dental Crowns Cost? (you have to wade through some other stuff to find the pricing but it's from only 7 months ago)

Essentially, it looks like prices are ranging from $700 to over $2000 per crown in the US, depending on lots of variables.  I had no idea they were that expensive :(
