RealSelf Feedback - please help us improve RealSelf.com

By Sharon at RealSelf on 06 Aug 2009

Our goal at RealSelf.com is to provide people with a place to get support for a cosmetic treatment--both before and after.  Sometimes we get feedback that we've fallen short of this goal. More often we get suggestions for changes that would enhance the experience. Since RealSelf is ultimately about you and your needs, we thrive on getting constructive feedback. Please share yours. It makes a difference.

I want to post a question, I really tries to keep it within the length limitation but it's not possible because the question will not have all the details...please make it longer then 510 characters....

I totally agree with David30603060 ... it took me forever to whittle my words down enough for it to be accepted, but then my "question" was edited by the review staff before it posted and removed all the pertinent info I couldn't fit in the body....so my question was pretty much useless:( I tried posting again, but really couldn't fit my question and the details the docs would need to answer it in so few characters. Not surprisingly, all the doctors that have been nice enough to respond to my edited first question are saying, "we need more information" - LOL. I understand you wanting to put a limit on it, as they could get quite lengthy if you don't & what doc has time to read all that, but 510 characters is just not enough:) Thanks for listening!!

After researching for Surgeons for quite sometime. I finally decided to post about me on my profile with also a few questions for the ladies. Unfortunately my post is never posted. I'm afraid to post and it happen again.

I think it's a bit strange that members can't edit our profiles like we can on other sites. If members can't do this, and doctors can, it gives realself the image of being biased towards the physicians when it claims to be a site that stands for equal and fair communication between physician to potential patients. Just pointing that out, as I'm not the only one who thinks this. Another thing that might be of improvement is having a like button for forum posts or other posts of that matter. And stating the time in which something was posted considering the chronology of posts tend to get scrambled as soon as people press the "reply" button. I hope you consider both of my suggestions if you haven't already. Thanks.

Hi Julia,

Thanks for your feedback and I apologize for the delay in replying.

I'm not sure I completely understand your profile question, so please clarify if I'm interpreting it wrong. Anything a community member posts -- forums, comments, etc. -- is posted on your profile. This is true for doctors too. This lends authenticity to the site, since people can't "hide" behind anonymous comments and are accountable for what they post.

I can certainly appreciate that you might not want to have an embarrassing question associated with your profile, and if this is the case then we can anonymize certain posts for you. (We will know where they've come from but the public won't.) But, as a general rule, what you post is a part of who you are on RealSelf, and since profiles are fairly anonymous then this works for most people.

For the "Like" button, we are actually working on this feature. You can "Thank" reviews and answers (which is our version of "Like"), and it's an option to roll this out to other types of posts too (e.g. comments, forums...). I agree this is a really good feature to have so people know when their posts are helpful.

Finally, the chronology of comments is something we're working on improving too. Right now, any direct replies to a comment are nested underneath the original comment, which can make things seem a bit out of order. We're hoping to make this easier to use very soon!

I hope this helps. Please feel free to write back if you have any other ideas or if I've misunderstood any of your suggestions. You can also reach us via email if you'd prefer to share your thoughts privately.

Thanks!

Someone just walked me through the commenting issue you were mentioning, so now I understand what you mean (it wasn't what was in my original reply). Our web development team are looking into it. Thanks for putting it on our radar!

Anybody??

Is there a way of editing your profile? I don't feel that it is appropriate that members can't edit which questions they would like on their profiles and which questions they would not like. I have many questions that I asked, simply out of curiosity of the field, but the amount I think affects my credibility. Please let me know if I can change this and if not, please let me know why. Thanks.

Why can't I edit my original post? Plus, I accidentally submitted an update twice... How do you delete posts or updates?? Also, can you make this forum more visible? I'm sure if people could find it or knew it existed, it would be much fuller.

Hi Alex,

We designed the review form like a diary: to show a snapshot of how you are feeling each day. Everything you've shared -- your expectations, doubts, even the embarassing stuff -- is a part of the whole story. Editing or deleting an older entry is like going back and erasing bits of your diary.

Of course, we're human :), so if there's something you really need changed (e.g. you accidentally revealed information that's too personal), email us and let us know and we'll delete it for you. (I've deleted the duplicate update on your review.)

You can always change things like your cost, photos, ratings, doctor review, etc. on the "Update" page as your treatment progresses.

Regarding making this forum more visible, I'll take that feedback to the rest of our team and see where else we can put it. We're always happy to receive feedback via email too, if there are ever any suggestions you want to share privately.

Hope this helps!

Thanks,

--Sharon

In every person's account, is there any way to archive all comments and reviews and pictures? Maybe have a bookmarked section for favorite topics, a reviews section for things personally reviewed, and a comments section for anything else such as stuff in the q and a and this page. I think the profile/ account page looks skimpy and it would be nice to have extra resources... It's like a combination of cool ideas from yelp and Facebook.

Hi Alex,

This is a really cool idea and I've passed it along to our development team. Thanks for all of the great suggestions -- you're keeping us busy. :)

Under my profile, is there any option to directly click on favorite topics such as links to treatments through the subscription page?

It would be so super if you had information on orthokeratology or ortho-k! They are like braces for teeth except they're for treating vision of eyes.
  • Reply

can you point us toward a website that explains these treatments?

Orthokeratology basically fixes the shape of your eyes and your vision without doing anything permanent, this is seen as the equivalent to braces for tEeth. Also, it fixes your vision like LASIK, however, it's safer, less expensive, and probably a less scary :) Here is a link, but you can just google "orthokeratology" http://www.eyehealthweb.com/procedures/orthokeratology/

Other than orthokeratology aka "ortho-k", there are a few other procedures out there to fix vision such as Paragon Corneal refractive Therapy/ CRT and Photorefractive Keratectomy/ prk and Phakic Intraocular lense/ piol. Prk is basically like LASIK, except it uses one laser as opposed to two, which makes the procedure safer and less expensive. Also, piol is becoming popular because It is reversible where a lense is implanted into the eye and the real one remains in place. I don't know much about CRT but its supposed to be just like ortho- k.

Lastly, would you consider adding chin osteotomy aka sliding genioplasty? It's similar to a chin implant, but instead the bone of the chin is cut and moved up, changing the shape of the chin without a foreign object.

I love real self and have been looking at your site a lot lately as I get closer to doing a few procedures. You've given great support, however, I do have a few suggestions that might enhance members' experiences. 1) under ratings, I would add more columns beyond "Treatment," "worth it rating," "Avg cost," and "# of reviews.". What I would add is "average recovery time" and "average duration of procedure." 2) under the "topics" column, I would add other options for treatments than "dental" or "all topics" such as "skin" or "hair" or "eyes" or "breasts" or "nails" or "weight" or "ears" or "nose." 3) also I would add more treatment options such as orthognathic/ reconstructive jaw surgery, osteotomy of chin, Autologous fat transfer with brava for breasts among other treatments.

Hi Alex,

Wow, thanks so much for sharing your ideas! We're working on a number of improves to the review area, so I will make sure we consider your feedback as well, and I'll add your treatment suggestions to our list.

We do actually have an orthognathic surgery section and, although it's not separate, you can find some fat transfer and Brava information in the larger topic areas linked below. When we have enough information we could certainly separate these out into their own sections, but I just wanted you to be able to find the information you need in the meantime:

Reviews: Fat transfer to the breasts, also here and Brava

Questions: Fat transfer to the breasts, also here and Brava

Photos: Fat transfer to the breasts

Hope this helps and thanks again for posting your thoughts!

Thanks Sharon for the links on fat transfer! Fat transfer in the face is becoming more and more popular, however, it will be quite a few years before fat transfer to the breasts will be as common as silicone and saline implants... I guess until then, the fat transfer section works :) Also, thanks for the othognathic jaw surgery link!! However, do you have anything for osteotomy of the chin? I see there is a section called "chin implants" but this is distinctly different....

We don't have a specific section for this. Any non-implant related surgeries for the chin are located here. We have a few reviews for sliding genioplasty located in that section.
