Open Wound under breast

I'm having a hard time healing this open wound I have under my right breast. My lift was done May 17th and it has been about 2 1/2 weeks since the area opened after the scab feel off early. My doctor told me to cover it with triple antibiotic ointment and don't wear a bra at night, but not much has changed. I go back tomorrow for a checkup. Anyone have other ideas? Thanks,Becky

Get saline wash. You're doctor can give you a prescription for it. It will also make it not hurt. Sorry I haven't had much sleep. Don't mean to be short.

Hey everyone, i had my lift and new silicone implants put in on dec 20 so im exactly 4 weeks out of surgery! I have no pain at all but i have spitt a few stitches out and i have a wound on my right breast that is taking forever to heal. This is my 3rd boob job second lift! I had 2 sets a saline implants leak on me so this time i got the new silicone gel ones! I have to say i like these implants alot better! I read all ur posts about keepin it dry with no ointments or creams and at night i sleep braless and try to get as much air to that spot as possible! Some days i feel it looks better but then i take a shower and it softens my newly forming scab! I had my first lift (keyhole lift) w/ saline implants done when i was 24. It was a nightmare. I broke open in a tun of spots (partly my fault cause i smoked) and i felt like a monster. The dr. Also left some areola under my new higher nipple so i had a third nipple in my eyes. I became very anxious and stressed out. But i got through it and just learned to deal w/ my wide scars. A few years passed and my implant started to leak so i went to a very well known dr in my area and he said i didnt need a lift but he could laser my scars and the left over areola and put new implants in, i was very happy w/ the results! Well then about 2 months ago i notice my left implant was gettin very small and sure enough i went back to my dr. And my saline implant was leaking again, well this time i did need a lift (i had a baby) again and i was terrified to go through it again but kindof felt i didnt have a choice cause it was leaking so i went through w/ the inverted T style lift and got silicone beacuse i dont want anymore leaking saline ones. I know what u see at first is not what there goin to look like in the end result because it is night and day from day one to day 100 but i did everything right this time (havnt smoke in years) and i still have a spot thats giving me crap. Ive been crying a lil bit here and there because i just want it to heal up. It does look alot better beacuse of reading all ur posts and im doing the dryout method you all talk about but its so frustrating cause i really thought this wouldnt happen! Everything else looks great just that one annoying spot at the tension point on my right breast! Im hanging in there and my dr said everything looks great no infection at all and to just be patient cause it will heal. I have an amazing supportive husband who has stood by my side and had to pay for all these surgerys and he truely has made this process easier cause he helps me when i get down or anxious. But i feel bad for putting him through this again. I know the spot will heal and i know im gonna luv my boobs cause we tend to forget all the pain and issues when were all healed up but i wish it would hurry up and heal! Im so glad i found this website cause its nice to know im not alone. I thankyou all for sharing ur stories cause it makes me feel better after i read them. Wishing everyone the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

Hi I recently had my 3rd breast lift plus aug and I am having serious healing issues. My left breast opened at the t and is now bigger than a silver dollar. I tried using silver sorb which seemed to help close it but it is still raw and very Painful. I feel like its never going to heal and the scar is going to be huge. I've never experienced anything like this. I'm hoping you might have some insight on how long it takes to have skin come back on it. I'm getting worried that if it takes too long it could get infected. Thanks Hmvjdv

Hi, Hmvjdv - you don't say how long it's been since your surgery, so I recommend you read everyone else's posts (and think back on your past experience) to know when it's been "too long". That said, I also don't know if it is different on subsequent surgeries (if the skin that's having to heal is "new" skin or if it is some of the skin that's been cut on and healed before) so I'd be sure to ask your PS about whether it should be different this time around. It does take a really long time - so hang in there!

Hello Hmvjdv, You need to get saline wound wash. There is a prescription for it. Once you start using it you will notice a difference the next day. Do not try putting a blow dryer on it. I tried this as some girls on here suggested to to this. It made it worse for me. Using saline water was a life saver for me and also made me not hurt. Do it after you shower and do it twice a day.

Thank you both for your advice and help. I'm going on week 6 post surgery and about 4 weeks of it being open. I will try the saline. My wound is circular in shape and about the size of two silver dollars. I know everyone heals at their own pace but on average a wound that size, am I looking at several more months? I just need a timeline. It's so scary. Hmvjdv

Hmvjdv, I've read your previous post, and this one. My honest advice. This long of an opening, and size. I would recommend asking your plastic surgeon to restitch you. When wound openings get to 3 inches or more in size, and the length of time open. Your wound could close then reopen due to the strength of the new skin. It's very depressing, scary and down right upsetting! I've been there. Plastic surgeons, like things perfect, and pretty. They sometimes also don't like to "give in" to the mess up of the suture that was made and fix it! I would definitely pressure your surgeon to stitch you back up where you are open. It will make you and your doctor feel alot better. I mean at this point who cares what your scar will look like! You just want to be closed and healed and enjoying your new additions!:) that's my advice. I hope you get better soon!

I had my surgery june18 2012. I didn't completely heal untill the end of December 2012! Yes I was depressed. My doctor had to prescribe me ambien just so I would go to sleep. Instead of staring into the mirror and crying. My opening was the size of my palm! I am a dancer,so heck yea I was worried about the outcome of the scar. I believe it was in late October when one night I was at Walgreens and was looking where the gauzes were. (I went through about 3boxes a week). I saw saline wound wash! Which is something you spray on a scrape to clean the dirt out. I decided to buy a bottle. I figured hell it cannot get any worse than what it is already.. I was desperate. So after I took a shower and washed like my doctor told me to I sprayed the saline water on my wound. Then I covered it back with gauze. The next day I swore I could tell the difference. I did it again the next night. Yes it was working. Now when I did this it was a 3am. I didn't ask my doctor for permission. That Friday I called my doctor and asked him if he could prescribe me saline solution. I told him what I have done and that it has helped me heal. He said that at my next visit which was that following Monday he was going to introduce that to me. The saline I got from Walgreens in the first aid section was like $7.00. That lasted 2 sprays which was 2 days. The prescription is $10.00 I believe. Because of the large amount for some reason is why you have to have A script for it. Now I'm healed I have good days and I have bad days. My scar is nowhere as big as the wound was. I use dermablend to cover it. I go back to my doctor in September. I'm sorry. I know how you feel.

I'm so sorry you've had such a journey but I'm also very happy for you that you are finally healed. I also go through 3 boxes of nonstick gauze a week. It is depressing. I was considering removing the implants and giving up. Thank you for sharing your story I am going to try the saline wash. What made you think your wound was healing? Did it start to regenerate skin all over it or produce a big scab? I just want to know what to look for. Did you take pictures of it as it healed by any chance?
Barbie Girl 13 Mar 2013
The next day it just felt different. I could have been imagined it. I was in a weird state if mind.. YES, I do have pictures. My email is sarahmelissaharper@yahoo.com

You know that burning feeling you have. It was gone. I was on pain med for nearly 5 months! When I started the saline water I didn't take anymore. I didn't need to.

I'm a little over 1 month post from a breast reduction. About 2 weeks after the surgery, I got an open wound about the size of a nickel under my right breast. A week later I got an open wound the size of a dime under my left breast. Ugh! I followed the doc's instructions to the letter - clean with peroxide, apply antibiotic ointment, cover with gauze 2x/day. No visible improvement after 2 weeks and I'm super impatient. My friend suggested that I try Unkers Medicated Salve. It works! After 2 weeks, the dime size wound has completely closed & the other wound is closing. I apply it twice a day along with the antibiotic. Please follow your doc's advice, but if you've tried everything, it can't hurt.Good luck!

I am going through the same thing with my wound not healing. It's worrying me to death. My dr has me putting sliver sulfadiazine on it now
Mommyoftwogirls 17 Apr 2013
Where do you get that salve?

Hi, everyone. I said I'd post on the duoderm-like stuff (heavens - now I can't remember what it was called - same stuff though) after I was done with it. So - had surgery on June 26th, so that makes me almost exactly 4 months post. I did faithfully stick that stuff on for 10 weeks, so just got to quit about a week ago. I wish I had a "test" site without it to know if it made a difference, because I do still have very dark (purple, kind of) scars in most places, especially in my "creases". But, who knows what they would have looked like without? Sorry this didn't turn out to be more helpful! At 4 months I do love the way they look (especially in clothes) and have no neck or back pain (I had a reduction) so that's lovely. That said, they don't feel "normal" and I can feel the incisions from an awareness standpoint even sitting here bra-less - but it's not painful or anything - just weird. My only real "negative" at this point is that I still don't have feeling in the lower half of either of them - I can feel a poke, and oddly/happily they respond normally (so they can feel :)) but the nerve signals don't make it up to my brain yet. It's almost like I'm wearing a breast condom on part of them so a delicate touch is not something I feel at all. I have had a nerve block for shoulder surgery before and it took about 3 years (yes) to be completely back to normal where that nerve damage was, so I'm hopeful that this will continue improving, as that's one of the side effects I really didn't want (no feeling). I'll keep you posted, but am interested if others had this and how long it lasted.

hey everyone, i just had a breast lift last week and get my stitches out soon. i have had stitches in the past (not for plastic surgery) and every one of them has come open! i am worried this will happen again as soon as my stitches under the breast come out. is there anything you would recommend to prevent a wound or an opening? currently i am not using any ointments, just keeping the incisions dry and keeping them protected with gauze after cleaning them once a day. thanks!
ellieh 28 Oct 2012
Stay put and don't do too much - otherwise you are doing the right thing. I think it's overactivity that gets us - either stretching or just the weight of breasts from standing up or getting sweaty from either - that messes one up. It's soooo hard to lie around, but it seems to be the best thing.
Girl1983 5 Apr 2013
Don't use your arms for anything I think I would lay in Bed. I am 4 weeks out from my bl and I still have a open wound

Try the stretchy champion bras at Target that come in all different colors. They are SUPER comfy and didn't hurt one bit. They do need to go over your head, but I found I was able to wear them a week post op.
cliberty01 3 Oct 2012
I would wear your bra!! I have had a lift and you need the support, just switch to something that is comfortable

Is it okay to be braless in third/ fourth week? Will this cause more sagging? I read that you should not be braless for 6 mths but with the open wounds what are you suppose to do? One contradicts the other? Confused !
sb73 3 Sep 2012
My surgical bra did not work out for so I wore a traction sports bra since day 5..... I couldn't t from day one since I got very bad skin burns from the 3m tape so I had to let that heal. I did not get my binder until my 2nd week...but I guess that why you get for doing surgery abroad. Now in my third week I I have these open wounds and odd looking breasts... I just feel like its one problem after another. Not only do I have scars all over from the tape but now I have to worry about these scars. Just when I get over one problem another arises.
ellieh 3 Sep 2012
I wore the "surgical bra" for about a month - until my follow up with PS and he said I didn't have to anymore - but when I didn't go braless I still wore the surgical bra with the gauze (no ointment ever) on until the wounds completely healed. If it hurts, put the surgical bra back on - you probably aren't ready - just sleep braless and naked/no covers on top if you can so the wounds can air out as much as possible. The white stuff is normal (dead skin, apparently) but you still have a ways to go so try to be patient. My last scab didn't come off until about 2 months out, and by the end of the day my scars were sore (still are some days) - it's just a really, really long process.

Definitely talk to your PS about the shape issues though - I don't have experience with that so can't comment. Good luck - I'm sure all will be well!
Hiho 3 Sep 2012
I had the white stuff coming out as well - just keep the gauze on it - it will heal - it's all part of the process. I found the gauze would stay in place just with the crease of my breast. Good luck - I hope it all helps!
