The MonaLisa Touch laser therapy (MLT) is an FDA-approved mini-invasive treatment. It promises to tone the tissues and increase the blood flow and lubrication of the vagina. It's touted to be an effective treatment for women suffering from vaginal atrophy due to menopause or cancer treatment, as well as urinary incontinence. According to Doctor Sara J. Bernstein, it is a safe and effective procedure that helps relieve the uncomfortable symptoms that are associated with vaginal atrophy, which include: itching, burning, vaginal dryness, and painful intercourse.

According to Dr. Bernstein, the procedure itself typical takes 3 minutes or less of actual laser-treatment time. As a patient, below is a list of things that you can expect during treatment:
- Your vital signs will be taken upon check in.
- You will make your way to the procedure room, where you will be given some privacy so that you can change into that fancy hospital gown.
- Next stop, the exam table where your feet will be placed in stirrups in the same manner as a vaginal exam / pap.
- The physician will place a sterile "insertion ring" into your vaginal opening, this device allows the laser hand piece to be gently inserted and moved without rubbing against your labia so the procedure is more comfortable.
- After the ring is inserted, the laser will be fired and moved, fired again, etc. until the entire inside of the vagina has been completely treated.
- After the treatment, you will need to refrain from putting anything in your vagina for a few days, so sex is a big no no!
- You may feel a different sensation while urinating after the treatment, but don't worry, Dr. Bernstein assures us that her patients don't report any pain, she explains that "they have described it as "noticing" or "feeling" their urine flow in a different way."
