Has anyone tried a home microdermabrasion kit? Does it work or should I cough up another $60 to have microdermabrasion by a professional?

I have read some reviews on home microdermabrasion kits that gave good results. The cost of the kits, about 35 dollars and up, may not be so bad since they last for such a long time. Many kits state to not use the home treatment more than 2 times a week and they have enough supplies to last for at least 10 treatments. So, if you do the math the cost is not that bad.
To answer the question "Is it worth it?", that surely depends on your level of expectation. An at-home treatment will more than likely not deliver the same results as what can be achieved at the dermatologist's office. However, many spas (not medi-spas) have a license that only allows them to perform services (microdermabrasion / chemical peels)at about half the strength as the medical doctors. So, two at-home treatments may be equal to one spa treatment. Why not try the at-home kit and if you need more extreme results- go see the doctor.

I just posted this in another area though I thought perhaps it bears posting here also even though I can see this area hasn't been posted in for a while.
After trying a couple different microdermabrasion "kits" from the drug store and from Mary Kay and not really seeing a marketable difference, I purchased the Youthful Essence microdermabrasion starter set ($39.95) made by Guthy Renker (endorsed by Susan Lucci) in May of this year and of course was skeptical at first though thought "you'll never know if you don't try" and what's one more?
When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find not only the product with the resurfacing "tool" though an extra sponge, batteries (that still work!) and a body sponge (bonus gift that I didn't realize was going to be included).
I followed the instructions to the letter and was VERY happy at how easy it was to use and how great it made my skin feel without feeling tight, causing redness or any type of itching. I not only felt my skin looked healthier though was complimented on it! My skin felt smoother and more toned, I noticed that a few areas on my face with slight discoloration appeared to be gone (I didn't have a lot to begin with) and the pores between my nose and cheek area had been greatly reduced. It also has a very light "clean" smell, not a chemical smell.
The packaging said it was a 2 month supply though I got about 3 months "mileage" out of it using it a few times per week on both my face & body. I even use it on my feet and love it!
Hence I've ordered more and a few other products and love the results and the ease of using them. The instructions are simple and to the point, it takes little or no time to use now that I've got my routine "downpat".
The "turnaround" time for receiving the products was very fast and now that I'm "in the system", I receive promotional discount offers and little tips which I find helpful.
Please note: I'm not an employee of the company that makes this product and I'm obviously not Susan Lucci who endorses the product. I'm just your average 53 year old female trying to look the best I can without undergoing painful and costly proceedures.. at least for now!

I'm going to try some at-home dermabrasion so I'm reading all of your posts. My question is, have any of you ever purchased the "Soft Laser" for at-home use? It was around $130 and I'm thinking of trying it for some blemishes and under-eye circles. Does anyone have a review on something like this?

I purchased a glycolic acid 10% skin peel for around $20.00 and I personally did not feel it was worth the money. I have getting regular microdermabrasion since I was 40. I am 44 now. Microdermabrasion is worth the money for the crystal machine, not the new and improved diamond point machine. Be sure to ask about the type of machine before getting microdermabrasion. Also, find a good MEDICAL LICENSED ESTHETICIAN, not just any salon. The difference between a medical esthetician is that they are able to use medical grade products just like they offer at a dermatologist office. I get a 40% solution peel combined with microdermabrasion and the results are fantastic. My husband even comments that microdermabrasion is the REAL DEAL and he has noticed how much my skin has improved. Good luck.

Yes, Yes, It is so worth it. I am 38 y/o I have(had) sun damaged skin for LONG time. My skin looked like a leather jacket. No amount of make up wpuld give me that smooth flawless skin, Minerial powder, exspensive foundation, nothing. Everything I put on my face, looked like dried clay...podery and dusty. Once while at a department store. My Husband, told me he saw this,add while dozing off one night. It was suposed to help with all the things I had been complaining about. He talked me into it, so we bought it....Tears, tears, and more tears... I oved this from the first time. My face became so bright, and smooth and God as my witness, One day while sitting next to him, he was looking at me. and said.. Yous face looks like a little girl...I used the Neutregena set, it was the only one there at the time...but it was a life changing experience...I can wear any type of make up I want, and it goes on flawless...One more thing to add...I am a true believer of sun screen, That was my reason for the horrible skin in the first place..try it, you have nothing to loose, except, old skin, and some wrinkles..

I'm a esthetician and have a microdermabrasion machine and if u have ever had microdermabrasion done, u won't waste ur money on home kits.

Ladies- You're getting what you pay for. An at home microderm is not going to give you the wonderful results that you get in a doctors office or medspa. I've had wonderful results. At Least try it and then you can decide.

Shanna, I can totally hear what you are saying. I also had microdermabrasion treatments at the doctors office and was very impressed with even the first single visit (although I am very aware my skin, so maybe others don't pay as much attention as i do).
Anyway, after seeing what it would cost to have the initial sequence of 12 treatments (what they recommended for my mild acne scarring, uneven skin tone and large pores) and then add to that the cost of on ongoing treatments for what they call "maintainence" - I did the math on what it would add up to and I just couldn't afford it.
So without a lot of hope (and somewhat desperate), I started trying every over the counter treatment i could get my hands on...and I'd have to say you are right >for the most part< that you get what you pay for, because out of the 7 I tried, 5 not only didn't work but made my skin WORSE! (grrr....) however I was glad I kept trying because the two that I found that did work, made it worth it...and wouldn't you know the two that were the best WERE the most expensive. (still no where near the investment of the salon of course) However the one that was MOST expensive $75 (dr brandt) WASNT as good as the one that was a bit less $49 (microdermx)
There may be others but I wouldn't know because when I found that one, I stopped the search bc I finally got the results I wanted without the hassle of going to a salon. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being pampered, but for my skin issues - in this case -I just wanted results. I'll go get a massage if I want to spend money like that and be pampered. But to each his own, i suppose...
Strangely though all the treatments with the fancy plastic tool, spongey things were AWFUL, they didn't do anything but look good in a box. Like they're trying to make you think you're getting something for your money...NOT.
Read ingredients ladies (and gentlemen :) ) that's how you know what you're getting.

Recently I have been thinking of going to the Dr office and have microdermabrasion done but the cost is high. I did some research on microdermabrasion home kit and found youthful essense, has anybody used this before, any comment or advice?

If you want real results you will spend the extra money for a medical licensed microdermabrasion specialist. You do not have to go to a physician. However, make sure the person uses crystals and not the micro diamond new technology.

I am booked in to a Beauty Salon on 8/6 for a micrdermabrasion and am sincerley hoping that it does what they say! My skin isn't really too bad, but a few little lines etc showing up now - I am 44, but have had little exposure to the sun (living in Scotland!) - I will post my honest opinion afterwards! Been told that approx 6 sessions will be required at £35.00 per session (around $70)- fingers crossed all!!!!!
