Hair loss shampoo - does it work?

By Connie from Redmond, WAon 06 Feb 2008

I am thinking about trying a shampoo to see if it helps stop the hair loss. I have always had fine, thin hair, but about 3 months ago I started losing a noticeable amount of hair.  I have five brothers who are all bald, so I am worried that if I don't do something now, I may go bald too.  I don't want to waste my time and money if hair loss shampoo isn't going to help, so can someone tell me which hair loss shampoo, if any, actually works?

Shampoo is a topical approach, and hair is dead. Therefore, you can't bring it back to life, thicken it, or increase the amount of hair roots you were created with at birth with a topical approach. What does help in preserving what you have is paying attention to nutrition, rest, and stress. It's well known that stress is a huge factor in hair loss. However, with good management, you can restore your locks to their previous glory. Eating well with a proper balance of healthy protein, complex carbs, and essential fats does more than just revive your hair, nails, and skin. Your body will thank you with optimum performance for years to come as well. If you have someone to talk to who gives full and active attention without judgement - then you are lucky. But if not, then there's journaling - send your stress out of your body and onto paper regularly, and especially if you are bothered during your sleeping hours, which are also essential for good health. A decent shampoo (watered down) followed by a leave-in detangler rather than conditioner for thin, fine hair is all you should need if you are taking care of your health. Be wary of these false claims - our market is flooded with them. Good Luck!

My husband is in his late 40's. He started thinning a few years ago. He tried Rogaine it helped a little but not enough. He started using nulockz hair restoration kit and he is growing hair. His crown and frontal area are about an inch long after about 2 months (in places he wasn't seeing hair). I thought he used some of that toppik stuff because his head doesn't look as shiny, but he said it's been the product he's been using. I was impressed. It's 49 bucks for the kit, but well worth it to him. The cleanser and conditioner makes his head tingle and is growing in thicker, and the other combination that he applies on altering nights seem to be wakening up sumthin there:)

Hi Connie, If your hair is getting noticeably thinner in a short period of time, you might want to go straight to your doctor. Frequently when my clients have had these problems, it's either had to do with hormone levels or thyroid issues. If this is the case, once resolved, then the hair that you've lost will grow back. If your doctor says that you're in good shape and everything checks out ok, then I would consider a new hair loss program for you that might include: Rogaine for women, Omega 3/6/9 oil with Borage oil (taken internally by capsule, or by the tablespoon), MAURO Tricologia Scalp cleanser to cleanse the hair follicle twice weekly, and then a shampoo for hair loss, such as MURAD or Nioxin. About two years ago a client of mine went through a horrendous early menopause. Little did I know she was barely eating, and drinking wine and martinis to cope with her emotions. After she stopped drinking and started eating, she got the fullest head of hair I'd ever seen on her in 10 years. Therefore, be willing to look at your general nutrition and vitamin supplements. It all adds up. Good luck!
