Is Fraxel Repair suitable for Asian skin?

By millyrehc on 14 Mar 2010

Is fraxel repair suitable for asian candidate? I am thinking to do it to improve acne scarring but worry that the hypopigmentation would be quite bad for asian skin even though the acne scarring may have improved with fraxel repair. Also, will the redness taken even longer to fade away for asian skin? What are the other risk involved that I should know for asian skintone? Thanks!

Hi Milly, We have treated many Asian patients with Fraxel repair for acne scarring. It will definitely improve the scars. It may take from 1 to 3 treatments. Hypopigmentation is not a concern, it has not been reported with Fraxel repair. Redness may take longer to fade, but the skin is usually back to it's normal color by 8 to 10 weeks. The main risk and concern with Asian skin is an increased incidence of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). PIH always fades with time, but we are unable to predict how long it will last in the individual patient. Your decision should be based upon how badly your scars trouble you. The more they bother you, the more worth it to take the risk of prolonged PIH. Good luck and be well. dr. P
