Electrolysis for Freckles

I recently went to my fiance's dermatologist to have my freckles caused from sun damage removed. He used what looked like an electrolysis pen and zapped them individually. The whole procedure took under three minutes (He missed at least half) and now that that I have healed I don't really see any difference. I have since done some research online and all I have read about sun damaged spots are treated with lasers. Does electrolysis really remove freckles or did I just get ripped off 400$?
