Drains

By WestCoastgirlinPA on 23 May 2012

Just wondering what I can expect. I know I will have them for a week..the nurse said I will have to drain them myself until my post op appointment. Is it difficult to do yourself? Do they hurt? Any info will be appreciated!

Each surgeon has their own protocol for drains some require you to empty twice a day and some 3 times/day. Like others have said, they are more of a nuisance, they don't hurt unless you tug them accidentally *ouch*. Just remember that whoever cares for your drains should wash their hands before and after coming in contact with them. Washing hands and wearing gloves is even better.

Mine were removed day after. They felt sore and a little burning. When the nurse took them out, took a deep breath and exhaled slowly and it was done. Emptying and measuring was easy-there is a flip top thing along side the tube. Open it, squeeze to empty, and measure. I had a pouch to put the bulbs in so they weren't pinned to the bra.

Ask you surgeon how long he/she usually keeps them in. My doc does 5 days but due to holiday weekend, mine will be in 7 days. Empty 2x a day. Really not a big deal.

Mine don't hurt. They are more a nuisance than anything else. Basically they dangle from your bra where they are pinned. My hub has been dealing with the drain maintenance. He isn't loving the job but I am not totally sure I could do it myself and still keep my arms at my side. I hear the drains are somewhat painful when removed.

How long do the drains have to be in...and how often do they need to be emptied?
