Does my nose shape require a rhinoplasty specialist?

Some people think my nose is cute because it’s pixie or elf-like. When I was younger boys made fun of me, calling me stuck up because of my nose shape. When I look at my friends and celebs no one has a nose like mine. I don’t feel sexy and I’m obviously self conscious about it. I’m considering finding a plastic surgeon for a nose job. Does anyone know if some surgeons specialize by type of nose job, or is a nose job just a nose job?

Look for a specialist someone that specializes in noses. I doubt that you are going to find a plastic surgeon that does only nose jobs.

Look for a doctor that does reconstructive and revision surgery for nose jobs that have gone badly. These doctors should be more "specialized" in nose surgery and hopefully do a better job the first time around.

Look at lots of before and after images before choosing your doctor. Make sure the images are of actual patients of that doctor, not just examples of what good nose surgery looks like.

I've seen many results of before and after photos of rhinoplasty,I've always admired the various shapes of the caucasian nose, the elegant straight and high bridge, the oval or egg shaped nostrils, defined and beautifully contoured nose tip, also the anatomical thinness of the nose when viewed three dementionally,
I always wondered why can't African americans have a nose like that, i spoke with many rhinoplasty specialist about what i would like to expect before i go in for a consultations, but none of them were able to give me a straight answer as to my desired goal of the nose that i envisioned, however i've lost my realistic expectations of what i think my nose would look like after surgery because rhinoplasty is mostly planned to make slight ajustments to the ethnic nose. most patients are pleased with thier results even though it may not look how they expected it.
right now, i don't beleive that my nose could be culpted into a caucasian variant nose,
when i get my surgery done, i expect my nose be as i desired which would more than boost my confidence and self esteem.
I am of african decent and i come from the beautiful Island of Jamaica Based in the Caribbean.
could anyone give me some advice about Afican american patients desiring a caucasian like nose, you can also suggest a specialist i can trust,
help me restore my confidence you guys!!!
thank you!

can bone graphs used as implants for nasal projection last for ever permanenly? alternate to cilicone nose implants or they are absorbed by the face in a period of time.
are natural bone graphs always safe for rhinoplasty patients or the side effects are irregular structured shapes?

rhinoplasty is considered the most difficult operation by plastic surgeons.
try mark constantian or patrick sullivan near your area.

Rhinoplasty (which some refer to as a “nose job”), is the most difficult of all facial cosmetic surgery procedures. The nose is the central feature on the face, yet an aesthetically pleasing nose is one that gets out of the way of the other facial features. An attractive nose has a smooth transition from the arched medial eyebrow downward to the lateral nasal tip. The nose should not detract from beautiful eyes, lips, jaw lines, and smiles. When looking at someone's face, the center of attention should not be drawn to the nose. If the nose is the center of attention, then it is usually an unattractive nose. Correction of a nasal deformity or injury through Rhinoplasty or Revision Rhinoplasty restores the balance of the facial features. Successful Rhinoplasty surgery should result in a natural appearance, avoiding the obvious signs of a “bad nose job” (pinched tips, ski-slope profiles, or the dreaded "pig" nose tip, see the recent movie “Penelope”). Additionally, the function of the nose should be the same or better after your surgery.

A board certified Rhinoplasty surgeon should be able to perform both closed Rhinoplasty (incisions inside of the nose) and an open or external approach (small incisions under the tip of the nose) depending upon what the individual nose demands. The best chance for an excellent Rhinoplasty result is at the first surgical opportunity, but your surgeon should be familiar with performing Revision Rhinoplasty as well.

At your consultation for your Rhinoplasty or Revision Rhinoplasty surgery, computer imaging is very helpful to get an idea of how your nose will look after the Rhinoplasty surgery. This will allow you to have a realistic expectation of your Rhinoplasty surgery results. At that time, you should also go over before and after photographs of previous patients. All Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty surgeries should be performed in a state accredited, outpatient surgicenter, or hospital with a board certified anesthesiologist. Rhinoplasty surgery should take anywhere between 1 1/2 to 3 hours. I personally do not use "packing" inside the nose in 99% of my patients as this provides for a more comfortable recovery period. Many other surgeons prefer to routinely pack the nose for 2-5 days. After your Rhinoplasty surgery, you can expect your nose to be taped and splinted for five days. Most patients experience very little pain during their post-operative course. Most patients state that it feels like a stuffy nose with slight sinus pressure, which can be relieved by plain Tylenol, if necessary. Most patients are able to return to their normal non-physical activities within one week, and return to normal physical activities after three weeks. The nose continues to improve over the next twelve months. Good luck.

You will probably never find a surgeon that does only nose jobs, but I personally chose a facial plastic surgeon. It was a little bit more expensive, but a smarter choice!

Hi,
I have had the pleasure of reading the posts regarding your question. I agree with most of the posts. The term "specialist" is a relative term. There are many of us who consider ourselves specialists in the nose, both from the Facial Plastic Surgery group and from the Plastic Surgery group. There are few of us who do only, or mostly noses in our practice.

The other thing I agree with the most is to look for before and after pictures of noses that look like yours - some of the surgeons websites have the pictures separated by "type" or appearance. I hope this helps.

Hi Im from South India, Chennai to be exact. From my pic, u would hav seen how my nose looks. I want to become a model and I need to have the 'perfect nose' or close to it. I want to know if closed rhinoplasty is possible, how much it will cost, the side effects, good surgeons where I live and everything else that anybody can contribute. If I have to go for open rhinoplasty, I'd like to have experts' opinions on it and what I can do. I also want to know if I need any other facial cosmetic surgery.

Thanks.
My actual topic is in http://www.realself.com/forum/do-need-rhinosplasty
I couldn get it to appear on the list so i thought id post it as a reply on a related question. I have posted a pic so that I can get experts' comments.

Hi Mary,
Where are you from?
