How soon did you go back to work?

By WestCoastgirlinPA on 24 Apr 2012

I have a very light duty office job...40 hours a week. My BR is scheduled for May 30th, which is a wednesday. I plan of returning to work on June 11th. That is 11 days off. Hoping this is enough time.    Thanks! WestCoastgirlinPA

I work shift work, 12 hour days & 12 hour nights, my surgery on the 30th falls right in the middle of one of my vacation breaks and I'm then taking 2 rotations off after that which will put me back to work on June 22nd, so just over 3 weeks off. I've been told that I could come back on modified duties (6 hour shifts) for the first week if I need it, which I may take them up on. A friend of mine had the surgery in February and expected to be back to work after 2 weeks. She is very athletic & high energy & she was shocked by how tired she felt afterward. Shes a nurse with a busy workload so she took an extra week off.

I am taking about 5 weeks off...I work at a job that requires very heavy lifting.

I went back after two weeks and was fine.

I would say depending on your job... My doctor has me out 4-6wks because I work with adults with mental disabilities and aggressive behavior.

Hi girlinPA - originally I thought oh I'll be out for a week - well inactuality I was out for 2 full weeks, back 1/2 days for a week then the Dr. had me do a 2nd week 1/2 days. In total I was out for 2 full and 2 1/2 day weeks. This is my first full week back and I'm doing ok - just still tired. My employer had me officially FMLA to be safe. Personally, I have a desk job too but I'd take all the time you can. It is really major surgery.

Thank you so much for the reply! I realize everyone is different. I am only able to take off 11 days..that is all the time I have left on my PTO. Obviously If I cant..I cant..and Ill deal with it then. I had a pretty quick recovery after my hysterectomy..I know this is different..but hoping I make a speedy recovery! :)

I went back to work on day 13. The most difficult part about it is the fatigue- but it's definitely doable. Good luck!
