Hi all, I recently saw the plastic surgeon/ENT in my hometown for a rhinoplasty consultation. I have been unhappy with the shape of my nose as long as I can remember (large hump and crooked) and have had lifetime breathing problems through my nose. The appointment started with a health history with the nurse, then watching an outdated q&a video on rhinoplasty surgery, followed by the doctor examination. When he came in, we talked for about 10 minutes on my history of breathing problems, lack of smell and health history, and then he did an exam that lasted about 5 minutes. He looked up my nose, felt around my face and looked at the back of my throat with a mirror. Afterwards he recommended a turbinectomy, septoplasty for a deviated septum, and rhinoplasty to get rid of the hump and adjust the tip. I asked a few questions, he took pictures, and then the nurse came in to schedule surgery. Here are my concerns/questions: 1. He said that the turbinectomy requires a 24 hours hospital stay after the surgery. In all the information I've researched, I haven't come across any stories requiring a hospital stay. Does this seem accurate? 2. He said that I will need to have packing for an entire week and have the internal/external splints for 2 weeks. Again, I haven’t seen any recovery stories involving packing and splints taking that long and am wondering if this seems accurate as well? 3. I asked about computer imaging, and he said it is not ethical to offer it due to unrealistic expectations. Does this seem like a reasonable excuse? 4. I asked for previous patient before/after pictures, and the nurse told me that they didn’t have any to show because it is too hard to get patients to release the photo due to it being the face and not being able to stay anonymous. It is a huge concern not to have a single picture of his work. I live in Montana which is a less populated state with hours and hours between the major cities. I know people have traveled far for a reputable surgeon, but it would make life soooo much easier getting this done in the city that I live in. This is the only surgeon available in my area. He has a good reputation in general as a plastic surgeon/ENT. To complicate matters, my insurance will cover everything including the cosmetic part, but the policy is being dropped Jan 1 due to Obamacare. I have kept my surgery appointment mostly because I want this change so bad, I want to be able to finally breath/smell, and don’t have any other choices in my city. I have pushed the listed concerns out of my head and am just hoping I get good results in the end. Am I completely crazy for going through with this? Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.
