It all starts with understanding that our mind and our body are one entity and no matter how challenging life becomes, we can remain in control of ourselves and our life if we know exactly who we are and see ourselves in a positive way. We all need to have high self-esteem in order to become all that we can be. The first step is to be aware of our own capabilities, potential and limitations and fully accept them. Only then can we set up realistic goals and deal with problems and stress effectively. Confidence comes from accomplishments, from knowing that we worthy and are able to achieve respect and happiness. The more meaningful accomplishments we achieve, the more connected we will feel with our strengths. And that is when we have a solid foundation for self-esteem. Self-respect shows in everything we do. Maybe we don’t have the body we dream of, but if we take care of ourselves and make the best of what we have, the world will perceive us as confident, competent and important people. When we feel in touch with our most appealing qualities (physical and intellectual), we start looking, walking, talking and acting like the success we deserve to be.

It is important to understand that your body image mirrors what you think of yourself inside. When you look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you are unattractive because you are overweight or you do not like something about your body, and you repeat this pattern of thought each and every time you look in the mirror, I can assure you that you will indeed always remain overweight and feel unattractive. What you think, you become! If you want to improve your body image, start by taking a good look at what you say to yourself internally. Have you heard the saying, “Fake it ‘till you make it?” And remember, small steps add up. Decide today to choose only good thoughts about your body. Julia Hasting, author of You Can Have What You Want, says, “You can let your old self-image go.”
