IPL Hyperpigmentation

I had a photofacial/IPL procedure done 4 days ago. I expected that my hyperpigmented blotches would be peeling off by now, but they still haven't. How long does it normally take?

A: Hyperpigmentation and IPL

If the pigmentation was a typical age spot (lentigo),  one usually sees rapid darkening of the spot after the treatment  ("peppering")  and then gradual flaking off from 4 days to 2 weeks.

If the pigment was from melasma,  the result is often not as gratifying and may require a different treatment like a topical bleaching agent, such as hydroquinone.

Are Multiple Treatments Necessary?

I did the IPL last month and didn't see much difference. Will additional treatments improve my face?

A: IPL is effective, but a series of treatments is needed

Hi-

IPL usually works very nicely at making uneven skin tones (dyschromia) more even.  It also works very well for typical sun and aging spots (lentigos).

A series of treatments is needed. We usually recommend a series of 3 treatments separated by 4-6 weeks.

As with any treatment to improve the appearance of the skin,  it is essential to protect against additional ongoing sun damage.  That means daily sunscreen, hat, sunglasses...

Best wishes,

Which is Better for Age Spots, Broken Capillaries, Minor Wrinkles and Acne Scars

...and redness, and minor loss of firmness? Affirm laser or IPL treatments? And, if you say Affirm -- how many treatments and how far apart? Affirm seems MUCH more expensive -- is it really worth it? And if you say IPL -- how many treatments and how far apart? Which mfg/brand/type? Thanks! I'm 46 with type II skin and I don't smoke. I can "see" my age spots more, lately, and my texture just isn't what it used to be... I want to invest in myself -- and I want the most bang for my $ and my time. Also, what treatments would you suggest as "compliments" to either Affirm/IPL? And, other than SPF 30 sunscreen, everyday, what else can I do to keep my complexion "ageless"?

A: IPL for age spots and capillaries

I think that your best value is the IPL. This will do a nice job on the "age spots" and also help reduce capillaries. It will not do much to increase the skin firmness. I recommend 3 treatments 4 weeks apart.
