How Long Should I Stop Using Hydroquinone Before Getting a Photofacial?

A: Hydroquinone use and IPL/ photofacial

You can continue to use hydroquinone while you are getting a photofacial or IPL treatment. There is no contraindication.

Can Photofacials Be Used on Individuals with Melasma?

I have white skin, medium tone, and tan fairly easy but can burn. I have a dark strip on my cheekbones (under where sunglasses would rest) and I think it was caused by sun exposure combined with bad sunscreen.

My dermatologist called what I have "melasma" but I thought that was only for people that have been pregnant or menopausal and neither is the case for me. I'm interested in doing a photofacial to remove this discoloration as well as my acne scarring. Would you recommend it in my case?

A: Avoid IPL to treat suspected melasma

We have not found IPL to be an effective way to treat melasma.  In fact, in certain cases, IPL treatment can make the melasma appear to be worse.  The best option to treat melasma is using topical bleaching creams - such as hydroquinone.  However, if you truly do have melasma, you should understand that it can be very difficult to treat.  You should also be especially careful about wearing sunscreen, and covering the affected areas from sun exposure (i.e. wearing hats).

Is It Safe to Have PhotoFacial on Healing Facial Scars?

Three weeks ago, I had enlarged sebaceous glands cauterized. The resulting scabs have fallen off, some naturally and many others prematurely by accident. Now I have several atrophic, reddish scars that are still healing. I would like to get a photo facial to remove general redness in my face. Would an IPL interrupt the healing process of my scars and thereby cause permanent scarring? Should I keep the scars moist (antibiotics gel) or dry? As you can imagine, I very worried. Thank you!!!

A: IPL for redness

Three weeks post procedure is a bit early to administer Photofacial (IPL) to your forehead area. For now, exercise patience and use a broad spectrum antioxidant sunscreen daily. Add a wide brim hat or baseball cap for added protection if you are going to be outside for more than a few minutes. This will help you avoid prolonged redness and minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation.

It should be fine to begin you to begin your photofacial in about 8 weeks.
