Can I Still Get Surgery on my Belly Button if I Plan on Having More Kids?

I had my first baby 7 months ago. During pregnancy, my OB said I had a possible hernia and to keep an eye on my belly button. Now that I've lost all my baby weight, and have been working out,my stomach is getting flatter and flatter, but my belly button is officially a big outtie belly button. It feels extremely strange when I press on it, like little grains or pebbles underneath the skin and its uncomfortable. There is no way I can wait another 5 years to get surgery, can I get it done now????

A: Umbillical Hernia After Pregnancy

Umbillical hernias are common occurences with the stretching of the abdominal wall with pregnancy.  A large umbillical hernia is ironically less of a risk than a small one.  A small hernia has a greater chance of having intra abdominal tissue become trapped and unable to escape.  Tissue swelling can cut off the blood supply creating an emergency need for repair to prevent tissue death.  So it might be prudent to repair your hernia but put off the  tummy tuck until after you have finished having children.

What Are The Different Types of Tummy Tuck? What Is Best For My Case After Massive Weight Loss?

I have heard the tummy tuck called extended, anchor cut, fleur de lis and full abdominalplasty. Can you explain the difference in these, when they are use and if there is a cost difference between them. Can any of them be used when having a lower body lift? I had open RNY bypass surgery six years ago and lost 150 lbs. I am now considering plastics to finish what I started. Tess

A: Body Lift After Massive Weight Loss

Congratulations on achieving your 150 lb weight loss.  The best solution for removing the left over excess skin is different for each person.  A lower body lift gives more improvement than an abdominoplasty or extended abdominoplasty alone.  You can see improvement in areas adjacent to the trunk, such as your back and thighs and groin.  The fleur de lis approach is used primarily in people that already have a large midline upper abdominal incision.  The cost is generally proportional to the amount of time the surgery requires to perform, not by the length of scar. Come to a consultation with an open mind.  Identify a plastic surgeon with much experience  in treating the massive weight loss population certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  Do not allow your bypass surgeon, a general surgeon to do your abdominoplasty.

What Should I Possibly Expect For My Tummy Tuck Results If I Keep Losing Weight? (photo)

I am 26 yrs old & have had 2 C-sections. I'm 5'4" exactly, 185lbs & have a good amount of muscle from working out throughout my life. Since I had my babies, I found that I can lose weight everywhere BUT my 'fat roll' that hangs over like a flap of skin. I have continued to lose weight and will continue even after my TT. I was 145lbs at my comfortable weight and would like to eventually get there. My question is, what can I expect to have after my TT now & later if I do lose more?

A: Weight Loss Before a Tummy Tuck

When a patient asks me whether or not they need to loose weight befoe having a tummy tuck , my answer is not always the same.  If you find losing weight to be easy for you I suggest losing ahead of time in order to get your best result.  On the other hand, if I have patients that have tried and failed to lose weight and know that weight reduction is unlikely, I see no reason for them to punish themselves by denying a tummy tuck.  So I will do a tummy tuck on certain overweight people  as long as they fully understand the choice.  It sounds like you are on a roll with your dieting, so keep it up before having surgery.
