I have been through a lot of stress and lack of sleep during the last 6 months. I am 46, my skin looks dull/grey, lacking healthy glow and has sagged visibly. Also my eyes have dark circles and have lost roundness of my face. I am having light chemical peels done at a beautician after my doctor's recommendation. So far I have had 2 but still not happy with the result. Will my skin go back to looking healthy and more importantly a bit tighter after 5-6 peels? What else can I do?
Dear Julieyoi, Thank you for your question and photo. Skin is a mirror of our health and habits. Skin shows stress, lack of sleep, and poor eating habits. Your first goal should be to take good care of yourself to correct any dysfunctional daily patterns that are reflected by your skin. Light skin peels, such as those a cosmetologist is allowed to provide, are not likely to restore your skin to its former quality. There are many other options including deeper peels, such as TCA, injectables and conservative surgery. A consultation with a PS certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery will help you make some good choices for yourself.
Does it increase the chance of blistering during the first few days? Is there an increase in possibly scarring or uneven skin tone?
Ultra violet light causes damage to DNA in your skin. Tanning is a protective mechanism that is stimulated by the damage to the DNA. The more we know about tanning beds, the less they are accepted as safe. A peel helps to eliminate damaged upper layers of skin. It is not a good idea to purposely damage your skin before repairing your skin. Find a good spray tan product instead. That's the only healthy option.
I am 6 months post-op from gynecomastia treatment. My surgeon used a peri-areloar incision to remove both glandular tissue and perform liposuction. The scar was kept under pressure for over 2 months and was massaged daily for about 3-4 months. Overall it has healed rather well. There is a small degree of hyperpigmentation on the edges of the scar. I think the scar would be virtually unnoticable if it weren't for the hyperpigmentation. Is a very mild chemical peel safe? Will it help?
Scars take a good 12-18 months to get to their final color. Redness usually fades and the brown hyperpigmentation starts to fade. I would recommend starting with some type of fade cream, such as a 4% hydroquinone that your plastic surgeon can perscribe.. If that does not work then a Vi-Peel or TCA peel might be helpful.
