Mole Is Raised With Red Ring Around It- What To Do?

My Husband Recently Had a Mole Checked by the Family Doctor.  The Mole Has Been on His Shoulder for Years but Recently a Red ring appeared around it and the mole raised 5 mm. It is bigger than a pencil eraser and dark brown/not smooth. The doctor wants to remove it in the office. He plans on taking margins also. He was trying to figure out how deep he needed to go. This doesn't sound right to me. I read that a punch biopsy with follow up by a dermatologist would be the better way to handle this situation. We know the mole is suspicious, and the doctor doesn't want him to wait to get into a specialist. liastdbubut

A: excisional biopsy is the best. punch biopsies would need some normal tissue for the best diagnosis

a punch biopsy could miss normal tissue and you may not find out the depth of the lesion. An excisional biospy is the best way to get the best diagnosis. if you do a shave or punch biopsy it could make the second biopsy harder to make a good diagnosis. Can a Raised Mole Be Removed from the Eyebrow Without Losing Hair?

Can a Raised Mole Be Removed from the Eyebrow Without Losing Hair?

A: raised mole removin it without losing hair can be done

removing it though will require losing some hair but when you close the excision it should appear like no hair was lost in the first place. If you laser the mole away in this area there is a high likelihood for a bald spot in this location. Below is a video to illustrate our answer better. Nevus Shaved 2 Months Ago, Will The Indentation and Brown Color Fade With Time?

In 1994, I had all of a nevus's (on face) color removed via numerous laser treatments. 2 mos. ago, I had the raised (now colorless) portion of the nevus shaved off. Now there is an indentation and brown area (where shaved). I don't know if the brown area is remaining pigment from the nevus or scar tissue. Can you advise wheter this color will fade w/time?(PLEASE NOTE, I DO know that it is not wise to remove the color, but didn't at the time - that right now is not my concern.) Thanks so much!

A: indentation and brown color for mole removal with shave techniques

Shave biopsies were taught to me to be the gold standard for biopsies. You can't get a good pathological diagnosis with shave biopsies because you aren't able to see the normal tissue next to it to make the diagnosis of malignancy. You may need to excise this indentation and that would get rid of the brown pigmentation too. Below is a video to illustate our answer better.
