What is Prevelle and what is Prevelle Silk?
Prevelle is a hyaluronic acid filler. Its claim to fame was that it was less painful than Juvederm and Restylane. This was because the anesthetic, lidocaine, is pre-mixed into the syringe.
However, now that Juvederm and Restylane now contain lidocaine, there remains only one possible benefit to Prevelle. It is shorter lasting than its competitors. If a patient wants to dip their toes into the filler market, but is afraid of possible side effects or grotesque looking results, this may be the product for them. It only lasts 2-3 months.
I can see no other benefit to Prevelle and only carry a small amount of it in my practice.
What is the difference between Prevelle and Prevelle Silk?
Coincidentally, to your question, the Johnson and Johnson representative visited my office today.
Johnson and Johnson purchaed the Mentor Corporation. Mentor was the company that developed Prevelle and Prevelle silk. Mentor was a relatively small company, very familiar to my plastic surgery colleagues since they manufactured breast implants. Now that they have been taken over by J&J, with their massive marketing potential, you will hear much more about these two products.
Both of these products are hyaluronic acid fillers. This one comes with an anesthetic and therefore should be less painful than their competitors Juvederm and Restylane.
Prevelle is designed for the finer lines, areas of more delicate skin, such as "smoker's lines" and crow's feet. It is to be injected in the upper and mid-dermis. Prevelle silk is recommended for somewhat deeper lines and will be placed in the mid to lower dermis.
What are the risks of side effects of Prevelle Silk and Prevelle? What should I know before getting the treatments?
Prevelle would generally have the same risks as the other hyaluronic fillers. As I see it the main risk is tissue necrosis if the filler impinges on a blood vessel. There would beb a slight additinal risk of an allergic reaction to the xylocaine that is used as an anesthetic in the syringe. However, this risk is very small.
In some ways Prevelle woudl be a little less risky than the other hyaluronic filler since it does not last as long.
