Massaging Lip After Juvederm Injection

I had 3 injections of Juvederm over 3 weeks and finally have the results I want, except for a couple of bumps on the upper lip. Can I massage them out and/or reshape them? If so, when can I start?

A: Too Late

Messaging with Juvederm works best within the first 48 hours and to a limited extent for the first week. After that, I am afraid your efforts will be fruitless.

Your photograph is not clear, but your upper lip appears about 1/3 larger than the lower lip. The reverse should be true.

If the lumps do not bother you should live with them with the knowledge that the product will eventually dissolve. Otherwise you might return to your physician and have hyaluronidase injections to eliminate the bumps. Sometimes the material can be extruded through a small incision, but anticipate swelling after this manuever.

How to Get Up-turned Lips?

How can I get the corners of my mouth to turn "up" again -- instead this "frown" I have, when I'm not smiling...

A: Filler or Plastic Surgery

For patients under 60, or whose skin is moderately firm, placement of a hyaluronic filler can correct this problem quite readily. My preference for this area is Restylane since I feel it gives better support. However, Juvederm can be used, especially if there are other areas to be filled that are more adaptable to this filler.

The filler is injected into the small triangle that seems to form with the down-turned smile. This is done with a fanning technique approaching at different angles. Then the corner of the lip is injected straight on and a nice lift results.

One caveat: this procedure often requires more filler than you might expect. It is better to have great results on both sides than either great result on one side and mediocre results on the other, or mediocre results on both sides. So, it might be better to save your money so both sides can be corrected optimally.

If you are over 60 or have saggy skin, a plastic surgeon can perform a smile lift in which the above mentioned triangle is excised and the corner lifted up.

How to Avoid Lisa Rinna Lips?

I don't want Lisa Rinna looking lips! What lip injection method/technique gives real natural appearing lips (that are full)??

A: Chose Injector Carefully

The pat answer would be to avoid the physician who injected her lips.

Since this physician used Juvederm for Miss Renna's lip augmentation, you must blame poor technique and not the material.

Other tips: Do not pressure your physician into placing additional filler. Nearly all good injectors will tell you that less is more. Realize that you can always come back for supplementation, but once the filler is in place it is far more difficult to adequately remove it.

If you have a thin upper lip, lower your expectations. You should be shooting for the lips you enjoyed at 16. Anything beyond is gravy. A photograph from that era can be helpful.

Make sure that your physician places filler into the lower lip if needed.

Ask for another opinion during the procedure. I find a second set of eyes  helps to ensure my patients have the symmetry we desire.

If you see lips you particularly like, bring a photograph with you. I have had a few patients do this, and though I feel like one of those artists that paints fakes of great artists, it makes it more fun.

Again, chose your injector with care.

BTW: I see less and less of those ridiculous lips ( duck bills, sausage lips, stripper lips). Do others agree?
