I am considering submental liposuction to get rid of a smallish double chin, and have consulted with several plastic surgeons. One, who is highly recommended, says he puts in a stitch or two at the incision site under the chin. Why would a surgeon do this? I was under the impression that open drainage leads to faster recovery and less swelling. Can there be a stitch and still open drainage? Or does a stitch automatically mean closed drainage? is there any ultimate difference in outcome?
Since it is as you stated a small chin liposuction there is no advantage to leaving the incision open to drain as little to NO drainage is expected. Suturing the small wound(s) closed would help make a finer scar and possibly reduce the risk of infection. Choose your plastic surgeon based on his or her experience and your comfort level and not on whether they will leave the wound open. Tumescent liposuction is the norm for Plastic surgeons trained in the past 25 years since it was popularized. Best wishes.
I am considering having lipo under my chin. I am worried about having loose skin afterwards or asymmetry.
you appear to have very good skin elasticity and would therefore be a very good candidate for liposuction of the neck. You also have a small chin and your results from liposuction of the neck and a small chin implant would be exceptional. Your plastic surgeon should be able to show you many before and after pictures of this exact operation to help you decide. If he or she does not or cannot show you photos of similar patients then continue your search for a board certified plastic surgeon. Best wishes.
After neck/chin lipo at what point should you become nervous or are certain things red flags? I am only two weeks out so I know it is soon but it's very hard not to worry. My lower right lip is "pulled up" if I smile with lips closed it looks normal but showing teeth, talking, laughing, yawning it's like my lip is "pulled up". Sensation is fine. If somethings only happens to 1 out of 1000 people I'll sadly be that one. Please help me understand what I can expect here & if or when I should worry.
Neurapraxia of the marginal mandibular branch of of the facial nerve is not uncommon after liposuction of the neck. It could resolve in a few weeks but could also take 3 months. If it is embarassing to you, I would recommend a small amount of botox to the opposite nerve to get temporary paralysis to the normal side. This evens out the smile and is a great relief to patients. Once the Botox wears off on the normal side the opposite injured side will have recovered from the neurapraxia. I have never seen permanent injury to the nerve from liposuction of the neck so rest assured the odds are it is only a temporary neurapraxia. Best wishes.
