Mini Tummy Tuck for Diastasis?

I just had twins and my stomach bulges out when I bend over. My doctor tells me I have diastasis. What are the advantages of having a mini tummy tuck to repair the diastasis?

A: Mini Tummy Tuck to Treat Diastasis

Mini tummy tucks do not treat rectus diastasis, only a standard abdominoplasty treats this problem both above and below the umbilicus.  Through the mini-tummy tuck incision it is possible to tighten the lower portion of the rectus muscles, but this only puts pressure on the abdomen and creates a flat lower abdomen with a bulge over the umbilicus in the upper abdomen.

A: Elasticity of the skin and mini vs. full tummy tucks

The elasticity of the skin is not what determines whether a patient needs a full or mini-tummy tuck.  The decision is based on the separation of the abdominal muscles (rectus muscles) and the amount of excess skin above the umbilicus.  Most  women have separation of their abdominal muscles after pregnancy above and below the umbilicus, as well as some skin laxity.  Patients who are true candidates for a mini- abdominoplasty  are those who have no excess skin above the umbilicus and no muscle separation - this group is smaller then the group requiring full abdominoplasty.

Am I a Candidate for Mini Tuck Plus Lipo? (photo)

According to one of the surgeon's I consulted, my c-section scar may be too low to remove if he does a full tummy tuck. He can remove the c-section scar if he does a mini-tuck. My only concern is, with a mini-tuck and lipo, what are the chances I my skin will wrinkle above the navel. I am 50 years old. Thanks!

A: Mini Tummy Tuck and Liposuction or Standard abdominoplasty

Based on your photographs only I believe you will get the best result from a full, standard abdominoplasty. While your C-section scar may not be removed with the procedure your overall improvement in abdominal shape will more than make up for it. The standard abdominoplasty will address the skin above and below your belly button as well as tighten your rectus abdominus muscles.  The standard abdominoplasty will give better and longer lasting results.
