I had cartilage excised from both of my ears and had the ears attached with permanent sutures to the head. My surgeon said that I should wear the headband for a month and I've been wearing it 24/7 for 3 weeks, with the exception of a handful of days. Do you think I could switch to night time wear only at this point without affecting the healing or the results?
Otoplasty surgery helps reshape cartilage of the ear. Each surgeon has their own protocol, which may vary a bit. Typically, most plastic surgeons want the ears to be protected for a period of time after surgery. The first week is the most important. Only your otoplasty surgeon can help answer your specific question. Best of luck.

my ten year old child's ears stick out, and i was just wondering if otoplasty can be performed on her at his age?
Hi Edmonton Alberta in Edmonton Alberta,
Otoplasty surgery is a good option to improve the appearance of large or protruding ears. Typically, this ear cosmetic surgery is performed once a child's ear size is mature, around age 6 or later. Otoplasty reshapes and pulls the ear back closer to the head.
While commonly performed in younger children, older children or adults may have this procedure too. The procedure is typically performed via IV sedation or general anesthesia. A small incision is hidden behind the ear. Several internal sutures are placed to reshaped the ear. Some cartilage may also need to be removed, as necessary.
Only after a comprehensive evaluation by a plastic surgeon or similar specialist to help determine appropriate options for you and your child. Best of luck.

I want to get an otoplasty surgery because my ears aren't too stick out of my head, but they're 60% stick out of my head, so they look pretty large, and they are, so, when you undergo a otoplasty, is the surgeon able to make your ears smallers? Because I don't like the helix and the earlobe, they look really fat to me. so, is it possible to do these procedures? thanks ! PS: I added a picture so you can comment about it :).
Hi Alann in Miami,
Otoplasty surgery reduces the size of the ears, change the position of the ears, and/or alters the shape of the ears. Typically, many patients benefit from a combination of removing cartilage, moving cartilage, and changing cartilage shape. Plastic surgery for the ear is commonly performed via an incision hidden behind the ear. For children, light anesthesia would be required. For adults, however, ear pinning surgery could be performed via local anesthesia.
It's very difficult to determine ear surgery for you based on a single photograph. Only after a comprehensive evaluation can a ear plastic surgeon help determine appropriate options for you. Best of luck.
