What Would Make Someone Not a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

I was wondering if someone with very crooked/crossed teeth could still be a candidate for porcelain veneers. If veneers will not work, are there any other cosmetic procedures that don't require years of treatment (braces)? Thanks.

A: veneers versus Invisalign

Crooked teeth will need heavy cutting down for veneers. Yes they are made within 2 weeks, but if something goes wrong then the teeth are destined for further work.

If your teeth are healthy and just crooked/discoloured, then striaghten them with invisible Invisalign and bleach them.

At least you can eat into a baguette without having to suffer a fractured veneer.

Are Porcelain Veneers Recommended for Really Crooked Teeth?

Is it possible for an adult to correct extremely crooked teeth with veneers, or should they see an orthodontist?

A: Smile makoevers are bad for your teeth

As a cosmetic dentist for 21 years, I used to do aggressive prep veneers for severly croooked teeth. But the problem was that I was trimming away upto 30% of the tooth and getting very close to the nerve.

The tooth may need root canal treatment or may fracture, worse still the veneer has less to cement onto.

Even if we do very little preparation or no preparation, the veneers are bonded onto the enamel and you can never reverse this situation. You are stuck with old or replacement veneers for the rest of your life.

SO I found Invisalign. Now instead of cutting down crooked teeth, I just straighten them. No root canals, no failing teeth, no crying patients.

Most dentists don't have veneers on their teeth or their spouses.

Can Veneers Be Taken off if I Want Them Removed?

should veneers not be right, will i be able to have them removed and return to my previous smile?

A: Are Veneers reversible?

All veneers are bonded with a strong glue. Th eglue is only as strong as your bite, so if you are a grinder/bruxist then you may chip or knock off a veneer.

As they are glued on then the process of removal will involve drilling off the porcelain. If the veneers did not involve preparation of the teeth, then the underlying enamel will be covered in glue and this has to be removed. The surface of the tooth will be rough and may not polish to a high lustre as enamel is very hard.

If your teeth were prepared then the dentine will become exposed on removal and could cause a lot of sensitivity and pain.

So veneers are not really reversible. I stopped doing veneers about 7 years ago and only replace existing veneers. I would rather do Invisalign and tooth whitening to improve the smile.
