Can Ears Actually Be Made Smaller with Plastic Surgery?

I have larger ears that also stick out a little bit from my head. I'm a young woman who would love to feel comfortable with wearing my hair up whenever I'd like without feeling like everyone is staring at my ears. I've read that ear size can be reduced, but I've also talked to two doctors who perform Otoplasty and they have both told me that they cannot make my ears smaller. What is the honest answer? I mean I want to get the surgery very badly, but I want to get pretty close to what I want.

A: Ear size can be reduced Ears can be reduced in vertical and horizontal dimensions. There are limits based primarily on your ear anatomy. There is more scarring than in traditional otoplasty. During your consultation you will have to evaluate your deformity and potential improvement compared to the risk of visible scars. Good luck

Ear Pinning

can ears be pulled farther away from face through surgery? will ear pinning still allow me to tuck my hair behind my ears?

A: ear deformity questions

Dear Sarahbush,

Ear pinning, when done properly, will allow you to tuck your hair behind your ear.  I am sorry but I am afraid that I don't understand your  first question.  A consultation with a Plastic surgeon will allow someone to evaluate your concerns and then perhaps better answer your concerns.  Good luck

Conchal Bowl Ridges After Bilateral Otoplasty...

I have a concern similar to these. http://bit.ly/mQjqRE (rs link) http://bit.ly/myupX6 (rs link) It has been 10 days since the operation. The pictures were taken today. Setback for each ear was approximately equal to this man's right ear: http://bit.ly/kOuCzz (rs link). My doctor told me that the swelling would subside within 4-6 weeks. While the amount of swelling has decreased from what seemed like fluid filled sacs, the newly added structures now seem hard.

A: Irregularity after otoplasty

Dear Ear123456,

The photos demonstrate the conchal ridges and I sense your disappointment.  There are many different surgical techniques which are often combined when performing an otoplasty.  Swelling following surgery can last for several weeks.  It it probably wisest to get another visit  this week to express your concerns with your surgeon.  See if after he/she examines you and with his or her intimate knowledge of exactly what manipulations were done, would recommend massage and suggestions for wound care for your right ear wound, etc.  Usually I would not consider a revision for 6 months.  Good luck
