Would You Recommend IPL for Patients with Perioral Dermatitis? (photo)

My Perioral Dermatitis is not inflamed at the moment, but I have to be very careful with any products/medications that I apply to my chin. I have brown spots on my face and I am thinking about having IPL treatments. My chin is almost always red and I thought it might take some of the redness out.

A: IPL in perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is viewed as a variant of rosacea.  IPL is commonly performed for treatment of redness associated with rosacea without problems.  So I believe it would be safe to undergo IPL if you have stable perioral dermatitis.  You may see reduction of the redness of your chin and it should reduce your hyperpigmentation as well. Since you do have these skin issues I would recommend having your IPL performed at a board-certified dermatologist's office in order to gain the most effective management for both your cosmetic and medical concerns.

Why is It Important to Avoid IPL Laser on a Mole (During Hair Removal)?

Can IPL laser turn a benign mole into melanoma? If not, why do I read that IPL laser should be avoided on a mole?

A: Avoiding moles with IPL

The target for IPL treatment is pigment.  The wavelengths of light used target red and brown pigment.  If a pigmented mole were treated with IPL the color would lighten although the substance of the mole itself would remain.  If it is the goal to remove a mole then a surgical removal and submission of the tissue to pathology would be recommended.  Seemingly benign moles may in fact be melenomas.  Any suspicious pigmented lesions should be removed and studied under the microscope.

IPL for Perifollicular Hyperpigmentation on Leg?

I have this perifollicular hyperpigmentation due to laser diode hair removal. Could this be improved with IPL pigment treatment? there is no keloid tissue or scaring, only the tinny brown spots.

A: How to correct darker pigment following laser hair removal

IPL treatment is best for the face, neck, chest, and hands.  I believe a better treatment for the dark spots on the leg would be a series of superficial TCA peels and 4% hydroquinone bleach applied topically.
