Lumpy Scalp After Hair Transplant

I had a hair transplant 7 years ago. I now have a very lumpy (almost deformed) scalp which seems to be getting worse. It seems to be on top of my head and is now almost in my forehead. Is this a side effect of the surgery?

A: Your lumpy scalp may be a consequence of cobblestoning

Obviously, I would have to see you to determine what is going on but if the lumps are in the areas that you had your transplanted hairs then the physician or team could have placed the hair follicles more than 2 mm above the surrounding scalp causing the condition you are having.  conversely, they could have put them too low, which would cause pitting or could cause cysts which could cause your problem too.  another problem could be that the hairs were piggybacked on top of one another, in other words one graft was placed on top of another inadvertently that could be leading to cyst formations.  that would be less likely if they are everywhere.  something else that could be is scar tissue.  if the grafts were too small for a large hole then scar tissue can develop around the graft and the perimeter of the hole.  this is why a quality team is as important as the surgeon making the sites and the design work.  it could also be a skin condition that is unrelated to your transplant or less likely related to it.  i think the best person to go to is to see a dermatologist.  sorry to hear that you are going through all of this.

Hair Transplant or Topical Treatment?

my mom is 45 years old and has a dreadfully thin crown area. does she need a transplant or should she try to work with a derm for a more topical treatment?

A: This may not be a clearcut case of female pattern baldness

Although I am not a dermatologist, I am a board-certified hair transplant surgeon meaning that I understand basic pathologies when it comes to hair loss that may preclude the success a hair transplant procedure.  Since you and your mother appear by the photo to be African-American, there are certain conditions that may be more prevalent in AAs than in Whites and that may or may not be helped with a transplant procedure.  Typically, traction loss that is due to tight braiding occurs more along the hairline and the periphery which appears less to be the case here.  This is a condition that responds well to hair transplantation.  When it is more toward the central scalp and into the crown, a common condition known as CCCA central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia may be the culprit which is NOT a surgically amenable condition, at least not when the disease is active.  This may or may not be what your mother is experiencing.  My suggestion is to find an excellent dermatologist for evaluation and possible biopsy to rule this out and possibly to help with any treatments of the condition.  Hope that helps.

Eyebrow Transplant for Hair Loss Due to Alopecia?

can eyebrows be restored if they were lost due to alopecia. I have unsuccessfully been receiving injections at the eyebrow site.

A: Depends on the type of eyebrow hair loss when it comes to eyebrow transplant

What worries me about your question is that you say you have been receiving injections there.  What kind?  The only thing I can think of is steroid injections for a condition known as alopecia areata that can affect the eyebrows.  If this is the case, then eyebrow transplants may not be successful and if they are the relapse of the condition could have you lose all the transplanted hairs that you paid for so i would need to know what kind of problem you have before i elect to do surgery.
