Does Microdermabrasion Work to Remove Milia?

Does microdermabrasion work on asian skin or leave marks and does it remove milia?

A: Manual removal is most effective treatment for milia

The most effective way to get rid of milia is to cut the overlying skin with a sterile needle or blade and then express the contents.  TIn our practice, we will throw in a few "extractions" as part of the standard microdermabrasion protocol.  This procedure will not prevent new milia from forming however.

A: Microdermabrasion

I have been using physician strength microdermabrasion for over 14 years for patients.  I use it primarily to stimulate collagen formation and to smooth the surface of the skin as a side benefit.  It is not my first choice for treating hyperpigmentation.  You should first consult with your physician to determine the cause of your hyperpigmentation.  Is it due to medications you are taking?  Is it after trauma? Was it after an acne flare?  Did you develope it during pregnancy?

The cause of the hyperpigmentation will help guide the treatment.  If after this step is completed the hyperpigmentation persists, then typically topical treatment with creams such as hydroquinone is helpful.  I particularly like the Obagi Nuderm program and have seen spectacular results.  For those patients whose hyperpigmentation persists, then I suggest a moderate depth chemical peel, like the Obagi Blue peel.

I have found physician strength microdermabrasion to have a minimal effect on hyperpigmentation.

What is Diamond Microdermabrasion?

i assume diamond particles are used in the microdermabrasion, right?

A: Microderm Using a Diamond Tipped Wand is Cleaner and Safer

I use and prefer a diamond-tipped microderm system.

I see that user "vcao" left a comment below and I agree with it 100%. My aesthetician also likes being able to control the depth of dermabrasion a lot better, and she can concentrate on deeper areas yet go easy on delicate skin by simply varying her hand pressure and the number of strokes.

Also, not having that grit all over the spa is nice too, and my belief is that some of thta grit can remain behind in the skin.
