Hi I Had a Breast Reduction when I Was 17 but Now at the Age of 33 They Are Now Larger. Can I Get a Revision? (photo)

Is it possible to have the procedure done again even tho my 1st doctor didnt do a good job. They were not even and the scarring is bad at the age of 17 I really didnt pay attention to all that i was jus happy to have small breast.

A: Breast reduction revision

This sometimes happens.  As we age and our bodies change (either due to hormonal changes or weight changes), women can gain weight back into their breasts and feel that they need another breast reduction.  This can certainly be done although it will be very helpful to your surgeon to obtain a copy of your original operative note so that he or she can understand what technique was used to reduce your breasts.  If you feel that one breast is still larger than the other, that can also be improved.  Your plastic surgeon should be able to tell you based on a physical exam, if you are a good candidate to benefit from a revisional breast reduction.

A: Breast reduction at the age of 15

I have performed full breast reductions in patients of your age.  I think it can be a surgery that offers an excellent improvement in your symptoms even at a younger age if the person is the right candidate.  I prefer that the patient is skeletally mature (meaning, no longer growing taller) and that the breast size is quite excessive but stabilizing.  The patient herself also has to be mature enough to take in the full discussion regarding risks of surgery and have a good support system of family and friends around her.  The stress of surgery (although generally positive) can be more overwhelming for a younger patient as well as the resultant changes in body image.  The physical examination is vital to rule out any issues with performing surgery and to assess your breast tissue and skin excess.  Then, the appropriate surgical technique can be selected to fit your needs if you are a candidate to improve from surgery.  If there is any doubt, I prefer to wait until the patient is older.  Keep in mind, any ongoing weight changes can impact your breast size so, there also needs to be a discussion about appropriate diet and exercise.  Please discuss this with your family and make an appointment to see a board certified plastic surgeon so that you can become better educated about your options.  Good luck!
