Retin-A is one of the few topical Rx products that can help improve fine lines and wrinkles. Without getting into too much detail, it essentially normalizes and regulates the turnover of cells in the treated area. This tends to even the thickness. For those with overly "thick" skin, it may thin it a bit, but usually in a good way.

However, Retin-A has been known to dry out skin and cause irritation as well (all retinoids can do this). Dry skin, especially in areas of thin skin around the eyes, can appear to have more wrinkles or worse wrinkles then moist and well hydrated skin.  This is probably how many of the OTC creams "claim" they can produce less wrinkles around the eyes in a short time period (by simply adding moisture); however, that moisture can quickly be lost as well.

Use a good moisturizing cream and start slow with your Retin-A around your eyes and you'll probably minimize the risks above.
