Breast Reduction with Dense Breast Tissue?

I am 42 Y.O., 5'6" and 145 lbs., and have maintained at or near a consistent weight my adult life (I also exercise daily). With age, my breast tissue has increased in density and size and I am troubled with frequent neck pain. Even the mammogram has a hard time getting a read on my dense breasts. Can a breast reduction be successfully performed when the actual breast tissue is very dense?

A: Dense breast tissue and breast reduction

A breast reduction could certainly help the symptoms you describe and is not contingent on the type of breast tissue that you have.  I find that women with "denser" breasts are often more troubled with the symptoms of heavy breasts.  The breast reduction may also make mammography somewhat easier and also easier to examine your breasts both for you and your doctor.  Although the breast reduction surgery will add some scarring internally, most mammographers will be able to render reasonable studies after this surgery.

I'm 17 Years Old. Can I Go from a DD to a B?

I'm a size zero pants size, I'm 5"1, but I feel like my breast are way too large for my body and I get too much negative attention. The bra straps absolutely kill my shoulders and leave ugly marks and my back sometimes hurt. It's absolute hell. My parents want me to get a reduction also. Is it possible to go to a DD to a B with it looking natural after? Also is it possible to go from a DD to an A? And lastly, Can I get surgery at my age? Thank you

A: Breast Reduction in teenagers

Your age is not a particular barrier for breast reduction surgery, and I have done reductions on teens younger than you, with gratifying results.  It is important however, to discuss this thouroughly with your plastic surgeon so you understand all of the ramifications of this body-altering surgery.  For younger teens, I like to see that there is family support for this decision.  I would be cautious however of wanting too small a cup size, and in fact with the usual techniques involved, it would be difficult to go from a DD to a B or A cup and maintain a reasonable shape-usually a C cup is more appropriate-again this is a point of discussion with your plastic surgeon.  However, no one can "guarantee" a specific cup size, and the goal is to remove the excess tissue that is causing the symptoms, and not "play to a certain cup size".

Is Visiting a Psychologist Necessary for Breast Reduction?

I am mildly dysphoric about my breasts and rather want a breast reduction taking my large-C-cup breasts to a manageable A-cup. I am 18 and want to know if it is true that I need to go to a therapist for permission to get this procedure. I have talked to several friends, all saying that although I have no desire to have any other procedure other than reduction done, I will be recommended to see a therapist to be checked for mental disorders and then denied treatment based on the diagnosis.

A: Psychological evaluation prior to breast reduction surgery

Hello Twig:

In my experience it is not necessary to obtain a psychological evaluation prior to breast reduction.  I frankly have not seen this as a prerequisite by an insurance carrier, although they seem to put so many "road-blocks" in the way of approval that I wouldn't be surprised that this would be mandated by some carriers.  Since you are only 18, your "body image" will be undergoing a number of changes in the years to come, so I would be very careful of changing it without a lot of thought and consultation with several board-certified plastic surgeons.  Going from a large "C" to an "A" cup is quite a difference, especially compared to something like an "E" to a "D". Sometimes, a good psychologist"s input is helpful, a I recall a patient younger than you who was quite large and was having severe problems with body image to the point of significant depression; with the psychologist's support, the breast reduction made quite a difference in this young lady's life ( and this probably helped with the insurance approval), but again I don't routinely obtain psych evaluations.  If you have a good relationship with your family, they may be another helpful resource to discuss this issue with. Good luck
