How successful are fat injections to the nasolabial folds of the face? Within the last two years, I have had Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm injected into the face. They worked well, but of course, don't last. A doctor suggested I try this more permanent type of injection. What is your feeling about this procedure? Is it similar to the gel fillers only with some fat removed from my body first? What is the down time and the average cost?
Fat can be a very good filler for many different areas of the body including the face. The advantages of fat is that it is natural (your own) and is usually in plentiful supply. Fat can be a very long lasting and possibly even a permanent filler.
The main problem with fat injections or fat transfer to the face is that it is unpredictable. This can very greatly with surgeon experience, technique and also the area of the face and the individual it is injected into. Another disadvantage of fat transfer to the face is that it requires harvesting (liposuction) to obtain the fat. This is an extra step not necessary with the fillers taken of the shelf.
Saying all this, fat can be a very good alternative to the traditional "off the shelf" fillers in certain individuals. Yes, it may also act as permanent filler.
I recently had a fat transfer to buttocks. Am I supposed to see the result right away or does it take time for the butt to become full from the fat transfer?
The results that you see after fat transfer to the buttocks should be immediate. You are also general pretty sore as well because a lot of fat is often transferred into the muscle. The amount of soreness and the results you see is usually directly proportional to the amount of fat injected. Unlike the face, the buttock requires a significant amount of volume to give nice results. This is generally several 100cc of fat per side on the buttocks.
I had rhinoplasty(open, nasal bone was broken as well)& facial fat grafting 3 days ago. Rhinoplasty result seems fine, but my face is EXTREMELY SWOLLEN, so swollen that I havent been able to Google another case thus far with so much swelling/edema after facial fat grafting. My doc says-this is just edema & will subside-he says rhinoplasty+fat grafting together is traumatic for the facial tissues hence the abnormal swelling. I feel he went overboard with filling fat in my face. Whats your guess?
It is normal to have swelling in the face after rhinoplasty and fat grafting. I routinely transfer between 20 to 60 cc's of fat to the face depending on the patient. Usually 30 to 50 percent of the fat is reabsorbed. Swelling will be present for weeks and takes six months to disappear completely. You will have a good idea in regards to the results about 6 weeks after the procedure.
